Tommy Fleetwood withdraws from Open de France at Le Golf National

Tommy Fleetwood will play no further part in the FedEx Open de France.

The Englishman was listed as a withdrawal ahead of the third round at Le Golf National, ruling him out of a bid for a second French Open title after his victory at the same venue in 2017.

Fleetwood had been scheduled to tee off at 11:23am alongside fellow Englishmen Sam Bairstow and Joe Dean.

No official announcement has been made about his departure, but it is understood Fleetwood pulled out due to illness.

Fleetwood had made an encouraging start to the tournament, carding rounds of 69 and 67 to reach 6-under par after 36 holes. 

He was seven shots behind the lead at the halfway stage.

Fleetwood's withdrawal is particularly disappointing given his strong record at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.

In 2017, he claimed his first DP World Tour title before returning the following year and playing a crucial role in Europe's victory over the United States. 

Fleetwood was also looking to respond after a disappointing showing at last week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The 35-year-old missed the cut at the DP World Tour's flagship event after carding rounds of 73 and 74 on the West Course. 

Fleetwood will be hoping the illness doesn't rule him out of next week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. 

Once again, the $5m event features a strong field.  

Fleetwood's 2026 season so far

Fleetwood has enjoyed a productive season on the PGA Tour, despite still searching for his first victory of the year.

He has recorded eight top-10 finishes in 2026, including a tie for fourth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a tie for seventh at the Genesis Invitational and a tie for eighth at The Players Championship.

His strongest stretch came during the summer, when he finished tied fourth at the Memorial Tournament, tied 11th at the U.S. Open and tied fourth at The Open Championship. 

He then added a tie for seventh at the FedEx St. Jude Championship before finishing tied 11th at the season-ending Tour Championship

Fitzpatrick leads Open de France

Fleetwood's Ryder Cup team-mate, Matthew Fitzpatrick, will take a one-shot lead into the weekend at the Open de France. 

The Englishman followed his opening 65 with a bogey-free 64 on Friday and sits on 13-under overall. 

Denmark’s Jeff Winther is one shot behind after matching Fitzpatrick's 64, while defending champion Michael Kim sits two shots off the lead at 11-under.
