Bryson DeChambeau shuts down fan after Rory McIlroy remark at LIV Golf New York
DeChambeau had a blunt response after a fan referenced his rival during a difficult round at LIV Golf New York.
Bryson DeChambeau had little interest in a fan dragging Rory McIlroy into his second round troubles at LIV Golf New York.
The Crushers captain was 7-over par for the tournament at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster when, following a double bogey at the 2nd, he smashed a tee shot down the 3rd fairway.
“See if Rory can do that,” one fan shouted out to the American.
DeChambeau immediately looked over and replied: “Chill out man, I’m 7-over!”
The LIV Golf superstar was clearly more concerned with his own struggles than reigniting his rivalry with the PGA Tour superstar.
The exchange came just weeks after McIlroy strongly criticised DeChambeau following the American’s controversial two-stroke penalty at The Open.
McIlroy said he would not “defend Bryson”, accused him of being “performative” and claimed the situation had held the championship “hostage” while players and officials waited long into the night to see if DeChambeau was going to continue playing the next day.
DeChambeau did not add to the feud in Bedminster, instead finishing the week at 7-over par in a tie for 38th.
The result ended his hopes of catching Jon Rahm in the LIV Golf Individual Championship standings, with the Legion XIII captain securing the title for a third consecutive season despite finishing one shot worse than DeChambeau at 8-over par.
Torque GC's Joaquin Niemann won LIV Golf New York with an impressive three-shot victory on 16-under par.
The win marked a record ninth for Niemann on the LIV Golf League.
DeChambeau, did however, win the team title at Bedminster with the Crushers finishing 6-over par and two shots clear of Legion XIII and Torque GC.
LIV Golf now heads to Indianapolis following a week's break, with reports suggesting the Team Championship scheduled for later this month will be cancelled.
On Wednesday, LIV Golf CEO O'Neil claimed the league had secured an unnamed investor to keep them afloat in 2027, albeit with a reduced schedule.
The unnamed investor, according to Bloomberg, is BC Partners' credit division.
No details of the amount of money that will be invested have been announced.
The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has pulled the plug on spend past this season, has invested more than $5 billion since the league launched in 2022.
O'Neil expects the transaction, which may be a loan, to be finalised by September.
Ted Goldthorpe, the head of BC Partners, was seen in attendance alongside O'Neil at LIV Golf New York on Sunday.
