TNT Sports presenter confirms LIV's finale has been canned as star player may want out

TNT Sports presenter Craig Doyle has claimed LIV Golf's season finale has been cancelled and Joaquin Niemann may be thinking about leaving the breakaway tour. 

It has been unclear for weeks whether LIV's $40m team championship in Michigan was going ahead. 

LIV were supposed to be bringing the curtain down on their 2026 campaign for the second consecutive season at the Saint John's Resort over 27-30 August. 

But Doyle told viewers during Sunday's broadcast after Niemann wrapped up his ninth LIV title that the season will wrap up next week in Indianapolis. 

And after Doyle and former tour pro Oliver Wilson watched Niemann's greenside interview, the presenter said: "We're gonna hear a lot more from him over the years, whatever tour he ends up on."

LIV Golf are yet to officially announce whether their team championship has been canned. 

The news is not unexpected given the breakaway tour - which launched in 2022 - has been in a crisis mode since April. 

After the 2026 Masters, Saudi Arabia's PIF confirmed it would no longer bankroll the league after the conclusion of the season. 

The PIF have reportedly ploughed somewhere between $5bn-8bn into LIV but have decided funding the league is no longer consistent with their investment strategy.

The decision saw LIV Golf's chief executive, Scott O'Neil, face a race against time to secure new funding to keep the competition alive in 2027. 

O'Neil previously placed on record his desire to raise some $300-$350m and promised new investors they could turn a profit within three years. 

Last Wednesday, O'Neil told reporters in New York that LIV has secured an unnamed lead investor to keep it afloat in 2027.

He did not disclose who the mystery backer was, but it's widely believed to be London-based private equity firm BC Partners. 

No details of the amount of money that will be invested have been announced, whilst there has been speculation that the agreement - which O'Neil expects to be ratified next month - is simply a loan. 

The agreement may also be contingent on LIV ensuring their star players remain on the roster. 

Bryson DeChambeau's appears to be ready to commit his future to LIV. He also wants to play on the PGA Tour again. 

Jon Rahm, meanwhile, has been reluctant to publicly discuss his situation. Rahm is believed to be owed more than $150m. 

The Financial Times reported last week that the PIF want to pay off remaining player contracts at a discount to avoid liability and negative attention. 

O'Neil said he hoped both players would "come along for the ride" in the next iteration of LIV. 

The season-ending team championship last year was undoubtedly a huge success, with tens of thousands of tickets sold. 

Rahm's Legion XIII quartet defeated DeChambeau's Crushers in a thrilling play-off, banking $14m in prize money. 

As of Sunday evening, tickets were still being sold for the 2026 showpiece. 

Officials at the Saint John's resort have repeatedly declined to comment on the status of the tournament.
