Report: LIV Golf set to cancel $40m Team Championship as official announcement looms

Flushing It has reported that LIV Golf is set to cancel its season-ending Team Championship in Michigan, with more official details expected to be confirmed by the league on Wednesday.

The latest development follows claims from Martin Kaymer last week that there was only a "five per cent chance" the season finale would go ahead as planned. 

According to Flushing It, sources with inside knowledge of LIV Golf have confirmed the Michigan team event is set to be scrapped, with an official announcement anticipated on Wednesday.

The Michigan event had been scheduled for 27-30 August and was due to serve as the showpiece finale of LIV Golf's team competition. 

However, it now appears set to become the latest disruption in what has been a turbulent season for the breakaway league. 

It is now understood LIV Golf Indianapolis, scheduled from 20-23 August, will become the league's season-ending event.

LIV Golf returns at Bedminster next week, before a two-week break until Indianapolis.

Flushing It's latest update follows claims made by the account less than 24 hours earlier that multiple contractors had been informed their travel and accommodation for the Michigan event had been cancelled.

A number of vendors are still owed money, claims Flushing It, with several claiming they have not been paid for months. 

Even the Championship rings for the team winners had not been paid for, claimed one LIV Golf insider. 

The latest news comes after Mobii Systems Group filed a breach of contract lawsuit against LIV Golf last week, alleging the league cancelled its Any Shot Any Time feature at short notice.

Then the Asian Tour confirmed it was partnering with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, leaving LIV Golf with a further headache given it had been working together with the circuit on its International Series. 

LIV Golf returned from a near two-month break in the schedule in England last week.

That was after its New Orleans event (set for June) was postponed amid concerns over extreme temperatures and course conditions. 

The postponement of its Louisiana tournament resulted in one of the longest gaps between tournaments since LIV Golf launched in the summer of 2022. 

Questions also continue to surround LIV Golf's long-term future. 

It remains unclear whether the league will continue beyond this season after the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) confirmed earlier this year that it would not provide funding beyond the 2026 campaign. 

As things stand, LIV Golf does not have a confirmed financial backer for 2027.

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf's future, there remains some optimism from CEO Scott O'Neil and some of the players that the league can continue next season, albeit potentially on a reduced schedule. 

However, no official plans have been announced.

Reports also emerged from LIV Golf UK last week suggesting a number of players have grown increasingly frustrated with the direction of the league and would like to explore opportunities elsewhere if they become available, regardless of whether LIV Golf continues next season.

Jon Rahm cut a visibly frustrated figure throughout the week at JCB Golf & Country Club, prompting speculation among some observers over his long-term commitment to the league, although the Spaniard has made no public indication that he intends to leave.

Bryson DeChambeau's current LIV Golf contract is also due to expire next month, placing further focus on one of the league's biggest stars. 

Whether the two-time U.S. Open champion and Crushers GC captain agrees fresh terms could become one of the defining storylines of LIV Golf's uncertain future.

With questions mounting over the cancellation of its season finale, ongoing legal disputes, contractor payments and its financial outlook beyond 2026, LIV Golf is expected to face intense scrutiny over the coming days and weeks as it prepares to clarify its plans.
