English amateur Lottie Woad continued her impressive rise in the game by finishing tied third and one shot out of a playoff that was eventually won in incredible fashion by Grace Kim at The Amundi Evian Championship.

Woad, 21, fired a brilliant 7-under 64 to finish the week at 13-under par and one shot out of a playoff contested between Kim and World No.2 Jeeno Thitikul.

It marked Woad's best ever performance in seven career major appearances.

Kim, 24, made a stunning eagle on 18 to force extra holes with her playing partner Thitikul, who narrowly missed from eight feet for the win in regulation play.

But in an even more dramatic moment, Kim struck her second shot into the water on the first playoff hole before chipping in for birdie. Thitikul then duly held her nerve to hole an eight footer to extend the playoff.

Kim then went and holed a 15 footer for eagle on the second extra hole to capture her first career major title.

The win marks Kim's second LPGA title and sees her earn $1.2m.

Thitikul will be left to rue what might have been as she held a one-shot lead down the par-5 18th only to make par.

The World No.2 was also going in search of her first career major title.

England Golf amateur Woad, who represents Florida State University, was looking to become the first amateur to win a major since Catherine Lacoste at the 1967 US Women's Open.

Woad last week won her first tournament on the Ladies European Tour with a dominant performance at the Women's Irish Open.

She became the first amateur in three years to win on the LET last weekend.

Woad needed to finish inside the top 25 in order to earn her LPGA card so she will be able to become a member of the circuit when she wishes to take up full membership.

It also remains to be seen whether Woad will now choose to turn professional after her latest two results.

"I'm still not sure, take the next week to talk about it with my family and coaches and then I'll make a decision after that."

On earning membership of the LPGA, Woad said: "Really excited, it's always been my dream to play on the LPGA so really looking forward to it and just grateful for the opportunity of the program."

Woad will now compete in the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links in two weeks' time, a week before the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.

Whether there's still an (a) next to Woad's name by that time remains to be seen.
