Bryson DeChambeau is only one stroke adrift of the lead at the halfway stage of the 2026 Open Championship.
The LIV Golf recruit produced a magical finish at Royal Birkdale on Friday, birdieing his final two holes to card a four-under 66 and reach seven-under.
DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion, trails Australia's Lucas Herbert by one stroke.
Herbert, 30, earlier lit up the Southort links by becoming only the sixth man in men's major history to card an eight-under 62.
The astonishing feat was matched minutes later by America's Sam Burns.
A group of three players, including 2026 Players Championship winner Cameron Young, are tied for third on six-under.
World number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is on four-under alongside Spain's Jon Rahm.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, Alex Fitzpatrick and home favourite Tommy Fleetwood are also nicely positioned at the halfway stage.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy made the cut but trails Herbert by seven strokes.

Tyrrell Hatton is moving in the right direction.
And fast.
His approach to the 15th stops within five feet and he tucks it away neatly.
Scheffler and DeChambeau have putts from around 30 feet, but no joy for either.

Another birdie putt drops at the 15th, this time from 20 feet.
Jon Rahm, meanwhile, is losing his cool.
Rahm tossed his club in anger after hitting his tee shot left.
He's likely to be warned under a new code of conduct that was introduced for the men's majors in 2026.
He walks off the hole with a bogey.

Tommy Fleetwood is greenside in two and he's out with the putter.
He nudges his ball to around four feet and has no problem tidying up his birdie.
Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, is not going to win on his return to Birkdale.

Justin Rose needs a couple of birdies to have any chance of making the cut.
His tee shot at the par-5 17th drifts right into the first cut of rough.

Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau can't take advantage of the par-5 14th.
But Tyrrell Hatton can.
That is a massive birdie for the Englishman, giving him some much-needed breathing room.

Tommy Fleetwood needs a response to that dropped shot at the 12th.
He finds the middle of the fairway at the par-5 14th.
That's one job done.
He'll be disappointed, surely, if he doesn't finish on at least 3-under here.

Justin Thomas picks up another birdie at the 14th.
That's his third on the back nine and sixth overall today.

Tyrrell Hatton is known as a bit of a hothead and it's clear by his body language that he's getting frustrated.
He was annoyed by the pace of play yesterday and his mood is not helped by a dropped shot at the 12th.

Bryson DeChambeau is having a week.
A four-foot birdie putt drops at the 11th to move the LIV Golf star into a tie for fourth alongside Sam Burns and Ryan Gerard.

He's hitting plenty of greens but can't buy a putt.

An unlikely birdie arrives at the 10th, with the Englishman holing a putt from some 40 feet.

Alex Fitzpatrick will head into moving day on four-under after producing a superb 67 today.
Bob MacIntyre's hopes of winning a first Claret Jug are also alive.
The Scot will be a tad miffed about closing with a bogey, though, having made eagle on the 17th.

And just like that, Jordan Spieth's hot start is undone.
The American picked up strokes at the 3rd and 5th but back-to-back bogeys sees the former champion golfer of the year slip back to 4-over.
Im -4 (14)
A remarkable scramble from Sungjae Im, who rockets a wood into the rivets of a fairway bunker with his second shot on the par 5 14th.
Despite this blip, he somehow manages to tidy up for par, and sits in a strong position at 4-under through the tournament.
Fleetwood -3 (4)
Fleetwood is warming into his second round nicely, riding the momentum of his hometown crowd to sink his second birdie in three holes.
DeChambeau -4 (4)
Despite being well away from the target line, the marshy area off the right of the fifth hole is a ball magnet today.
Some half an hour after Viktor Hovland sprayed a wild slice into the reeds and was forced to hit again for three, DeChambeau does the same. He hits his provisional to the middle of the fairway, and that'll likely be the ball he plays.

Bryson DeChambeau is off to a solid start, draining a long birdie putt to move up into a tie for fifth.
Meanwhile, Robert MacIntyre is back in scoring form, birdying the 14th to end a stretch of 10 consecutive pars.

The Southport boy is off to a strong start, draining a 15-footer that circles the cup before dropping in.
Further down the course, Alex Fitzpatrick is in a seriously strong position compared to his brother, currently sitting -4 and well in contention with another 5 holes to play.
Lowry -3 (F)
A strong, steady day for Shane Lowry, who taps in for birdie on 18 to move 3-under and well in the hunt going into the weekend.
McIlroy -1 (F), Schauffele E (F), Fitzpatrick +4 (F)
After an awful second shot on 18, Rory McIlroy gets up and down for par to finish 1-under and book his spot in the field for the weekend.
Aside him in the group, Xander Schaufelle faces a nervous wait after birdying 18 to finish smack bang on the projected cut line. Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick's tournament is over after he cards a second successive 72.

Cameron Young remains in absolute world-best form, birdying the final hole and carding a solid 67 to finish Friday in a tie for second.

A few of the late-afternoon big guns have hit the first tee. It's Rose and Thomas who get underway first, the former with an absolute mountain to climb at 5-over for the tournament. Thomas bogeys the first to get his round off to a shaky start.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is in the group behind, joined by Tyrrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau. All three get their first tee shots away without incident.

It's tough going for the American and the newly-crowned PGA Champion, who both end Friday's play on 1-over for the tournament.
The projected cut line is sitting at even par, meaning they could well be in trouble unless the wind picks up later in the day.
Xander Schauffele, meanwhile, misses his par putt at 17 to drop below the projected cut line. He'll need a birdie on the final hole to feel safe going into the evening.
Morikawa -2 (F)
A tough way to wrap up for Collin Morikawa, whose up and down back nine ends with a double-bogey on 18, dropping down to a tie for 22nd.
That could come back to bite him down the line this weekend.
