Bryson DeChambeau is only one stroke adrift of the lead at the halfway stage of the 2026 Open Championship.
The LIV Golf recruit produced a magical finish at Royal Birkdale on Friday, birdieing his final two holes to card a four-under 66 and reach seven-under.
DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion, trails Australia's Lucas Herbert by one stroke.
Herbert, 30, earlier lit up the Southort links by becoming only the sixth man in men's major history to card an eight-under 62.
The astonishing feat was matched minutes later by America's Sam Burns.
A group of three players, including 2026 Players Championship winner Cameron Young, are tied for third on six-under.
World number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is on four-under alongside Spain's Jon Rahm.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, Alex Fitzpatrick and home favourite Tommy Fleetwood are also nicely positioned at the halfway stage.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy made the cut but trails Herbert by seven strokes.

Morikawa -4 (17), Reed -2 (F)
It looked touch-and-go for Morikawa for a second, however after a faltering few holes he birdies the 17th to get himself back to 4-under.
Patrick Reed, meanwhile, will be left to rue a missed 2-footer for par on the 18th. It's been a strong round for the former LIV player, however, who finishes the day 4-under for the round.
Fitzpatrick +4 (15)
Another agonising putt for Matt Fitzpatrick, who leaves a birdie putt millimetres short to remain at 4-over for the tournament.
He needs three birdies from the remaining three holes to have any chance of sticking around for the weekend.
McIlroy -1 (14)
While all eyes have been on Herbert, McIlroy continues his slow climb back up the leaderboard, draining a downhill 25-footer to get himself back under par for the first time today.
Herbert -8 (F)
A crushing final putt for the Australian.
Herbert's tee shot veers right and winds up under a spectator barrier. Taking relief, he hits his second to the front edge of the green, taking in the applause of the crowd as he walks up to the hole.
He coolly chips to 3 foot, but pulls his putt ever so slightly to card a bogey on the final hole. He ends up on 62, equalling the all-time record for a round at the men's open, and clear at the top of the leaderboard.
Coody -3 (F)
It's been a strong day for Pierceson Coody, but a tough end as he goes bogey-bogey to drop from a high of third back to a tie for 10th.
Herbert -9 (17)
What a recovery from Herbert, who after hooking his drive onto a bare walkway fires an incredible pitch shot to leave himself an seven-foot putt for another birdie.
He leaves it just high, and taps in for par. He needs just a par to set the record for lowest round at a men's major.
Coody -5 (14)
Coody taps home a birdie on the par-5 14th to move into a tie for third on 5-under par.
McIlroy Par (9)
McIlroy crushed his drive over 400 yards to reach the green at the par-4 9th.
He gave himself a 12 footer for eagle, but he left the putt short.
It's a tap in birdie for the Northern Irishman though, and he's back to level par for the championship, which is eight back.
Reed -4 (12)
The former Masters champion is moving along serenely on day two.
Reed has just tapped in a three footer for birdie on the par-3 12th.
He's now 6-under for the round and to 4-under for the championship.
Reed, who will return to the PGA Tour when his suspension ends in August, is just four back.
Suber -6 (69)
Suber curls in a 25 footer for par on the tough 18th to finish the day with a 69.
The Open debutant finds himself a 6-under par for the championship, and very much in the hunt over the weekend.
Herbert -8 (12)
This is simply outrageous stuff from Herbert.
The Aussie pours in an eighth birdie of the round to move to 8-under for the tournament.
He's now on track to beat the lowest round in Open history, which stands at 62 (Branden Grace, 3rd round, Royal Birkdale, 2017).
If Herbert pars in, he would shoot 62, but with two par-5s to come there is every chance the LIV star could set a new Open record.
Sit tight.
Suber -6 (17)
After a tough opening nine, Suber has hung in there nicely today.
He's just two-putted for birdie on the par-5 17th to move to 6-under par and one back of Herbert.
Morikawa -5 (9)
Morikawa is moving along very nicely. The two-time major champion pours in a 15 footer on the 9th go out in 3-under and to 5-under for the championship.
The American is looking to etch his name on the famous Claret Jug for the second time in his career having won his first on Open debut at Royal St George's in 2021.
Herbert -7 (11)
It's another birdie for Herbert, this time from 10 feet under the hole at the par-4 11th.
The Australian is now 7-under par and two shots clear of American duo Suber and Cauley.
McIlroy +2 (6)
McIlroy falls back to 2-over par and as it stands, the wrong side of the cut mark.
Cauley -5 (10)
Cauley continues his impressive rise up the board on day two.
The American pops in a 35 footer for birdie on the par-4 10th to move to 5-under par.
He's just one back of Herbert as he goes in search of a first major title, just a month after landing his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open.
Herbert -6 (9)
Lucas Herbert is having a day, and he's just matched a new Open record.
The Aussie has just rolled in another birdie from 30 feet on the 9th to move to six-under par and it moves him one shot clear of Suber.
With his birdie on the 9th, the LIV Golf star has now tied the lowest nine-hole score in Open history of 28 shots.
Denis Durnian was the last player to achieve that feat in 1983.

Morikawa has just tucked away a 10 footer for birdie on the tough par-4 6th to move to 4-under par and just one behind the leaders.
The American is going in pursuit of a third career major.
Suber -5 (14)
It's a two-putt birdie for Suber who moves back into a share of the lead with Herbert.
Reed -3 (7)
This is some start from Reed.
He’s just drained another birdie from 15 feet on the par-3 7th to move to 5 under for the round and to 3 under for the championship.
Reed is not messing around today.
Suber, Norris -4 (13)
It’s bogeys for both Suber and Norris on 13 and it means Herbert takes the outright lead. Herbert is heading down the 8th.
Reed -2 (6)
It’s a fourth birdie in six for Reed who is charging up the board to 2-under par.
Herbert -5 (7)
It’s a fifth birdie of the round for Herbert, this time from 35 feet on the 7th. He’s in a share of the lead as he goes in pursuit of a first major title.
McIlroy +1 (2)
McIlroy makes an early birdie at the 2nd to move to 1-over par which is the likely cut mark. He’s only six shots behind the leaders and most certainly not out of this yet.
Cauley -4 (6)
Recent PGA Tour winner Cauley is moving nicely into contention. He’s just poured in a 10 footer on the tough par-4 6th to move one shot behind.
