Jackson Suber will head out in Friday's second round of The Open Championship holding a slender one-shot advantage after producing the lowest score on day one at Royal Birkdale.

The 26-year-old American carded an impressive five-under-par 65 on Thursday to move to the top of the leaderboard on England's famous links.

Suber is making his Open Championship debut this week and he has only ever spent five days in Europe.before.

Suber has yet to chalk up a first win, but has been in terrific form of late with three top-10 finishes in his last six starts on the PGA Tour.

England's Dan Brown and South Korea's Sungjae Im sit just one shot behind Suber after opening rounds of 66, while a packed chasing group is only two strokes off the lead. That group includes Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and American duo Cameron Young and Bryson DeChambeau.

Defending champion and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler made a solid start in his bid to claim a second Claret Jug, opening with a two-under 68 to stay firmly in contention.

Scheffler is looking to become the first player to succesfully defend The Open since Padraig Harrington at Royal Birkdale in 2008.

It was a more frustrating afternoon for Masters champion Rory McIlroy, however. The Northern Irishman begins the second round seven shots behind the leader on two-over par, and will need a strong performance on Friday to comfortably secure his place for the weekend.

McIlroy finds himself outside the top 80, with the cut for the weekend set for the top 70 players and ties after the completion of Friday's second round in Southport.

Elsewhere, England's Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton both finished the opening day at one-under par alongside Ryder Cup teammate Jon Rahm, leaving themselves well positioned to mount a charge over the final 54 holes.
