Ryan Fox produces electric finish to win The Open at Royal Birkdale

Ryan Fox produced the shot of his life on the 72nd hole of The Open to claim his first major championship title and break Cameron Young's heart.

The 39-year-old, from New Zealand, entered the 18th needing a par to force a sudden-death with the American or a birdie to win the Claret Jug.

Fox produced a moment of magic, hitting a towering iron shot from 172 yards to 11 feet and rolling in the putt to spark wild scenes.

He finished on total of 10-under, one clear of Young who had earlier tore round Royal Birkdale and posted a 64 to set the clubhouse target.

Young will be bitterly disappointed, especially as he came unstuck on the 18th after hitting his tee shot into the fairway bunker and smashing his approach into the lip.

It led to a devastating bogey and an agonising wait for the 29-year-old American.

Young watched an astonishing charge from the world number one, Scottie Scheffler, but the 2025 Open champion came up three shots shy of Fox.

Sam Burns, the 54-hole leader, could only muster a final round 72 to finish in solo third.

Home hope Tommy Fleetwood began the final round with dreams of still winning The Open but could only manage a 68 to finish in a share of fourth with Scheffler.

Fleetwood began his final round with a bang, holing a 73-foot putt for birdie but endured a torrid stretch around the turn.

Casey Jarvis, Lucas Herbert, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott, Russell Henley, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Ludvig Aberg rounded out the top-10.

Bryson DeChambeau, who has endured a controversial week after incurring a two-shot penalty, had to settle for a share of 14th.

Ryan Fox holes it!

My word. What a putt.

Ryan Fox holes it, carding a final round 68 to finish on 10-under par, one clear of Cameron Young!

Ryan Fox is the 2026 Champion Golfer of The Year!

Sam Burns misses

Fox -9, Burns -8 (18*)

Sam Burns up first... another good attempt but it slides by!

He tidies up the par but will finish one back.

Over to you, Foxy...

18:32
Ryan Fox hits a beauty

Fox -9, Burns -8 (18*)

Now then, what can Ryan Fox muster.

This man is one of the quickest players on tour and even with the Claret Jug on the line he wastes no time.

He fires a towering shot... it's a beauty! Looks like he'll have a 10-foot putt to win The Open.

Over to you Sam Burns.

It's a decent shot, but around 30 feet away...

18:26
Herbert finishes inside the top-10

Herbert -6 (71), Aberg -5 (71)

A valiant effort from Lucas Herbert, but he comes up short in his bid to win The Open.

He's had a great week, including shooting a 62 in the second round.

Aberg's also had a decent championship, but once again failed to get anything going when it really mattered.

18:25
Fox hits great tee shot at 18

Fox -9, Burns -8 (18*)

Now then. A birdie to win the Open Championship for Ryan Fox or a par to force a playoff with Cameron Young.

Young is on the range, checking his phone for updates.

Fox its a cracker.

Likewise Burns.

18:21
Huge chance missed for Ryan Fox

Burns -8, Fox -9 (17)

Sam Burns hacks out of the rough and leaves himself with a long putt from 30-odd feet for his birdie.

It's a great effort that stops in short in the jaws.

Ryan Fox has a great chance to snatch a one-shot lead but his effort just swerves right at the last second.

Agony!

18:17
Kim's race is run

Gerard -6, Kim -7 (17)

Groans from the crowd, as Si Woo Kim misses from six feet for birdie.

Eagle up the last required if he is to have any chance of winning the Claret Jug.

Doesn't look likely, does it?

18:15
Another unlucky break for Ryan Fox

Burns -8, Fox -9 (17*)

Ryan Fox finds another unlucky break at the par-5 17th.

His tee shot sails into a fairway bunker, right up against the lip.

He's forced to lay up to around 140 yards and plays a cracking approach to give himself another decent look at birdie.

Burns is nicely positioned but comes up short and left of the green. Looks like he's in the heavy stuff.

Up and down required.

18:10
DeChambeau finishes on 4-under

DeChambeau -4 (72)

Not the afternoon the American would've liked but there is no doubt he appreciated the warm reception coming up the 18th.

18:08
Herbert bogey

Herbert -6 (17)

Lucas Herbert will not win this year's Open after dropping a shot at the par-5 17th.

A real shame. He has played so, so well.

18:04
Fox bounces back!

Burns -8, Fox -9 (16)

Ryan Fox looks like he could snatch victory from Cameron Young.

He plays a delightful approach shot into the par-4 16th and rolls in a putt from 10 feet.

That puts Fox back in a share of the lead.

Burns makes his 10th par in a row.

18:01
Kim's hopes gone?

Gerard -6, Kim -7 (16)

Now then.

Si Woo Kim makes a meal of the short par-4 16th, sending his approach behind the greenside bunkers.

He chips on, but leaves far too much to do and can't save par from 20 feet.

17:59
Birdie finish for Fleetwood

Fleetwood -7 (68)

Emotional scenes as Southport's Tommy Fleetwood walks up the 18th to an incredible reception.

The Englishman provides a bit of magic, making a birdie at the last to post a 2-under 68 and finish on 7-under par.

Looks like he's got tears in his eyes, too.

So close yet again.

17:53
Fox escapes with just a bogey

Burns -8, Fox -8 (16*)

Fox pitches to six feet and manages to save bogey which will feel amazing considering where his tee shot landed.

Burns watches another good look at birdie just slide by.

17:50
Herbert needs big finish

Herbert -7 (17*)

Lucas Herbert leaves a birdie putt in the jaws at the par-4 16th.

Big finish required.

17:49
Fox in world of pain

Burns -8, Fox -9 (15*)

Ryan Fox is in a world of pain at the par-3 15th. His tee shot sails into the bunker and his golf ball comes to rest on the lip. He has no shot and is forced to go sideways.

Burns finds the green.

17:46
Unlucky for Kim

Kim -8, Gerard -6 (16*)

Kim finds the green at the par-3 15th and sends a putt from distance that seems destined for the hole until the very last second.

That was close.

He'll remain at 8-under. Gerard also walks off the difficult par-3 with a par.

17:42
Fox ties the lead!

Fox -9, Burns -8 (15*)

Over at the par-4 14th, both players have a crack at the green in two.

Fox drills his approach long of the green but plays a delightful chip to four feet and holds his nerve.

Burns finds the trap with his second and catches his bunker shot heavy. He settles for par.

17:37
Fleetwood birdie

Fleetwood -6 (18*)

Fleetwood is by the edge of the green at the par-5 17th facing a snaking eagle putt up and over a ridge.

It's a well-judged effort and he walks away with a four.

But it's too little, too late.

Sigh.

17:35
Herbert makes another par

Herbert -7 (16*)

Over at the par-3 15th, Lucas Herbert is miles away from the pin. He does tremendously well, lagging up to gimme range.

Onto the closing stretch for the LIV Golf man...

17:26
Frustrating bogey

Herbert -7, Aberg -5 (14)

Lucas Herbert can't take advantage of the par-5 14th despite being in good shape and only 50 yards from the pin paying his third.

Aberg has a 14-footer for his birdie that he simply must make.

But he misses.

17:20
Huge birdie for Fox

Fox -8, Burns -8 (14*)

Ryan Fox gets a 15-foot birdie putt to drop at the 13th.

Burns is close to matching him, but his putt swerves right at the last second.

17:17
Bryson DeChambeau still fightin

DeChambeau -4 (15*)

After the nightmare on the 11th hole, DeChambeau has responded by playing his next three holes in 2-under.

17:09
Scheffler posts 67, finishes on 7-under

Scheffler -7 (67)

To nobody's surprise, Scheffler goes for it at the last.

He elects to putt from off the green but race his third by and also misses the returning putt.

That's a bogey and a 67 from the world number one.
