Scottie Scheffler moves one leg away from career grand slam with victory at The Open

Scheffler and Li find the fairway at the 11th and go flag-hunting with their approaches. 

Li misses the green left whilst Scheffler, as we expected, is on the green. 

What can Li muster? Boom! It drops for a surprising three. 

Now onto Scheffler... it's low.

W. Clark -10 (14)

Wyndham Clark is having a great week. 

Today, he's jumped up 12 places on the leaderboard. 

Three birdies in four holes sees the American join the group on 10-under.

McIlroy -8 Fitzpatrick -10 (11)

Rory McIlroy follows a wayward tee shot with a wayward approach that finds the sand. 

He's up to the task, though, and splashes out to a few feet and tidies up his par. 

Fitzpatrick also walks away with a four. 

Scheffler -16, Li -10 (10)

Scheffler's birdie putt doesn't drop, so he'll remain on 16-under. 

Li, meanwhile, doesn't allow for enough break on a short par putt and slips back. 

Rory McIlroy now needs divine intervention. 

His drive at the 11th finds more thick stuff... 

Scheffler -16, Li -11 (10*)

Scheffler finds fairway at the 10th with his tee shot, then hits another superb iron shot that catches the slope and rolls back towards the cup. 

He sets up another chance. Looks like he has regained his composure now. 

Li's on the green too, but faces a tricky putt back down the hill. 

Bryson DeChambeau is currently in a share for seventh on the leaderboard after posting an extraordinary 64 earlier today. 

A first round of 78 made it seem as though he was heading for the exit at the halfway stage with his score on 7-over. 

But he fought back and finished on 9-under... 

Scheffler -16, Li -11 (9)

Super response from Scheffler, who finds a birdie three to get one stroke back from that disastrous double bogey. 

Li isn't going anywhere, either, and makes his three. 

Scheffler -15, Li -10 (8)

Scottie Scheffler responds with a delightful approach into the 9th. Five feet for birdie. 

Li is also very close for a three. 

Rory McIlroy immediately tells his golf ball to sit after hitting his approach from 185 yards into the 10th green. 

"Oh my God," he says repeatedly. 

It doesn't listen, and goes sailing through the green. 

Flier. 

McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (10*)

McIlroy settles for a two-putt par at the 9th to make the turn in 34. 

Fitzpatrick also makes a four. 

McIlroy tells his golf ball to sit after unleashing a drive at the 10th. 

It doesn't listen, and he's in the rough. Still, his ball is visible at least...

English -10, Gotterup -11 (9)

Chris has Gotterup his game if he wants to catch Scottie finish second. 

He moves to 11-under with a birdie at the 9th. 

Rory McIlroy unleashes an enormous drive at the 9th. He's got 75 yards to the pin.  

How close can he get? Not very. Poor wedge. 

S. Scheffler -17, H. Li -10 (8*)

Scottie Scheffler finds the fairway bunker with his tee shot and he's got real problems. 

As we know, bunkers on links golf courses have huge lips. 

Scottie doesn't seem too fussed, though, and he attempts to go for the green. 

Thud!

His ball hits the lip and returns to his feet. He takes his medicine on the second attempt and has got summon another escape. 

"That was a bit daft," says Sky Sports' Wayne Riley.

"That bunker's got more lip than Mick Jagger." 

The answer, at this point, is absolutely not. 

Let's remind ourselves with how Scottie Scheffler started the day. 

McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (8)

Matthew Fitzpatrick finds a welcome birdie at the 8th. 

His finishes around four feet from the cup and he makes no mistake. 

McIlroy, meanwhile, has some 30 feet to navigate. It's a good effort, but it's a par for the Northern Irishman. 

S. Scheffler -17, H. Li -10 (7)

My word. Scottie Scheffler makes his second huge par save of the day. This time, it's from 15 feet. 

"Seriously, folks, if you want to be good at this game then you've got to practice," opines Sir Nick Faldo on the Sky Sports broadcast. 

Li makes par. 

X. Schauffele -9 (10*)

The American pledged to attack Royal Portrush today in an unlikely bid to catch Scottie Scheffler. 

It has to be said that Schauffele is putting in a spirited defence of his Claret Jug. 

His second birdie of the day drops at the 9th. 

Scheffler -17 (7*)

Scottie finds the fairway bunker with his tee shot, splashes out and misses the green with his approach. 

A rare mistake from the World No.1. 

McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -9 (8*)

Rory McIlroy hacks his ball out of the thick rough and zips a wedge close. 

Fitzpatrick is pin high with a great look at eagle, but by his standards his effort is abysmal. That's short. Easy birdie though. 

McIlroy from four feet? In the cup. 

Scheffler -17 (6)

Big fist pump from Scheffler who holes a par putt from 16 feet on the par-3 6th.

The first sign of emotion from Scheffler all day and he remains seven ahead.

Scheffler -17, Li -10 (5)

Scheffler converts a 15 footer for birdie on the short par-4 5th.

Li follows him in from three feet for birdie to move into solo second on 10-under par. 

Scheffler remains seven ahead.
