Rory McIlroy pays tribute to wife Erica after winning BBC SPOTY 2025

The Masters champion beat F1 world champion Lando Norris and England rugby star Ellie Kildunne to the main award.

A tearful Rory McIlroy paid tribute to his wife Erica after he was named the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Masters champion was the odds-on favourite to win the award.

But no golfer had won since Sir Nick Faldo in 1989.

McIlroy was up against F1 world champion Lando Norris, England rugby star Ellie Kildunne, darts world champion Luke Littler and Lionesses Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton.

Kildunne finished second ahead of Norris.

McIlroy and his European Ryder Cup teammates won the Team of the Year award.

But Luke Donald missed out on the Coach of the Year award to England manager Sarina Wiegman.

A tearful McIlroy said 2025 was the year he made his dreams come true.

He was referencing his Masters triumph in April that ended an 11-year wait for a major championship triumph.

It also saw him join the history books as only the sixth men's golfer in history to complete the career grand slam.

McIlroy also helped Europe to Ryder Cup success at Bethpage Black in September, contributing 3.5 points in their 15-13 away win.

That week he also overcame a torrent of verbal abuse from outside the gallery ropes.

His wife Erica was even struck by a drinks cup on the second day of the matches, prompting extra security to be called in.

McIlroy paid tribute to Erica and daughter Poppy in his winner's speech.

"My wife Erica and my daughter Poppy, they're what sort of holds me together, my rock," he said.

"They couldn't be here tonight, they're back in America but I can't wait to get back to see them tomorrow and celebrate this with them as well so thank you for all your support [and] everything you've done for me over the years."

He added: "I would like to congratulate all of the other finalists.

"I know how much hard work and dedication it takes, so it is a pleasure to just be in this room.

"I feel truly honoured to just be a part of it. 2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true."
