American duo Ryan Gerard and Andrew Putnam led the Charles Schwab Challenge before play was suspended due to a dangerous weather situation.
Play was halted at Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth, Texas, at around 4.15pm local time due electricity being detected in the area.
At the time of the suspension, Putnam and Gerard had got into the clubhouse with a pair of 64s.
Gerard's superb first round included making every single putt he had within 15 feet. Putnam was bogey-free.
South Korea's Tom Kim and South Africa's Erik van Rooyen were also in a share of the lead when play was suspended and had just reached the 18th tee box.
Several notables are also in the field. Max Homa, who is yet to qualify for the U.S. Open and has recently decided to switch caddie again after sacking Tiger Woods' former looper, began well with a four-under 66.
Tony Finau also needs to win or come through final qualifying if he is to tee it up at the third men's major of the year at Shinnecock Hills over 18-21 June.
Finau was level par thru 14 holes when play was halted.
Two-time major champion Justin Thomas will be sweating the 36-hole cut after firing an opening 69.
The Charles Schwab Challenge has a total purse of $9,900,000, with the winner receiving a cheque for $1.782m.
