Golf insider spills more details on Jon Rahm's Ryder Cup situation
The DP World Tour will now "imminently" begin the process for an appeals hearing after Jon Rahm rejected their one-time offer.
The DP World Tour will "imminently" begin their process for an appeal hearing after Jon Rahm rejected their offer to end a long-running dispute, according to a report.
Rahm's Ryder Cup future is now in serious doubt after it was revealed he was not included in a group of eight LIV Golf players who have resolved their short-term future with the Europe-based circuit.
The DPWT released a statement on Saturday confirming Tyrrell Hatton, Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adiran Meronk, Elvis Smylie, David Puig and Victor Perez will not face disciplinary action in 2026 providing they meet strict conditions.
Those conditions include paying outstanding fines - reportedly in the region of £2.5m - withdrawing all pending appeals and agreeing to take part in "additional stipulated DP World Tour tournaments".
The DPWT also made it clear the releases apply for the 2026 season only and are not precedent-setting.
Rahm reportedly refused the conditions and is choosing to pursue his appeal against the sanctions. There are unsubstantiated reports Chile's Joaquin Niemann also rejected the offer.
Rahm, a two-time major champion, joined the Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway in December 2023 and has been fined heavily for competing in conflicting LIV events without releases from the DPWT.
The Spaniard, and the aforementioned Hatton, lodged appeals and the delay in proceedings allowed them to retain their Ryder Cup eligibility.
Both players played key roles in Europe's 15-13 away victory over the United States last September.
FlushingIt has shed further light on the situation with a lengthy post on X.
The account reported that:
- The DPWT and LIV Golf had a two-year "standstill agreement" that paused fines and suspensions
- The agreement expired on 20 February 2026
- LIV Golf requested an extension to the agreement but it was rejected by the DPWT
- LIV Golf "controls players' claims against the DPWT"
- The players are being told they must play six to eight DPWT events, up from four
- The added events will be chosen by the DPWT
"It's unclear exactly what happens now with Jon Rahm and the other players who have rejected the DP World Tour"s proposals," FlushingIt added.
"But it is expected that the DP World Tour will imminently begin the process for their appeal hearings.
"Given how this has gone in the past, the players will likely lose, and then LIV Golf could make a High Court legal challenge against the decisions."
What has been Jon Rahm's response?
Jon Rahm has not spoken publicly about the latest development yet.
He has always maintained that he has no intention of paying the fines whatsoever.
In January, Rahm opened up on the situation by explaining his stance during an interview with GOLF.
He said: "So do I think fines are going to magically disappear? I don't know I don't think so but I think that's going it's going to slowly go away."
Rahm added: "The only the one thing that for me about the fines is the tournaments I'm getting fined for playing or not playing I've never played and I will never play right.
"I never played them when I was on the PGA Tour and I would probably never play them in the future either because it was just not part of the schedule when I would play, right?"
Rahm indicated he would be prepared to pay the fines for events that he would usually play.
But there is a problem as everyone has to be treated equally, he said.
