PGA Tour star forced out of 3M Open after injury setback

Former World No.1 Jason Day has withdrawn from the Minnesota event due to a recurring back issue with his FedEx Cup hopes hanging in the balance.

Jason Day has withdrawn from this week's 3M Open due to a recurring back injury, casting further doubt over his hopes of qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The 13-time PGA Tour winner and 2015 PGA champion and has battled back problems throughout much of his career, and the issue has resurfaced again this season.

Day, 38, was also forced to withdraw from last month's U.S. Open with the same injury after appearing to put his long-standing fitness concerns behind him.

The former World No.1 struggled at The Open Championship last week, missing the cut at Royal Birkdale, having previously finished tied 55th at the Travelers Championship following his U.S. Open withdrawal.

Day had been scheduled to tee it up at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, but has now pulled out of the tournament.

Veteran Charley Hoffman has taken his place in the field, and will join Tom Kim and Casey Jarvis for the opening two rounds.

Day heads into the final three events of the PGA Tour's regular season sitting 72nd in the FedEx Cup standings, leaving him outside the all-important top 70 who qualify for next month's opening playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Currently ranked 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Day has recorded just two top-10 finishes this season.

His most recent top-10 finish came at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.

The Australian's 2026 PGA Tour campaign began brightly with a runner-up finish at The American Express, but he has struggled to build momentum since.

Aside from a respectable tie for 12th at The Masters in April, Day has not finished better than tied 38th, a result he posted at the Truist Championship in early May.

Day is not the only notable absentee from this week's 3M Open field.

Fresh from capturing his maiden major title at The Open Championship, Ryan Fox unsurprisingly withdrew from the tournament on Monday after his memorable victory in Southport.

Argentina's Fabian Gomez has replaced the New Zealander in the field.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the 3M Open as he makes his tournament debut at TPC Twin Cities.

Scheffler arrives in Minnesota after finishing tied fourth at The Open Championship and is the bookmakers' favourite to claim his second PGA Tour title of the season, and 21st of his PGA Tour career.
