Scottie Scheffler shocked his wife with one simple decision after winning the Tour Championship

Scottie Scheffler had already started celebrating his latest PGA Tour victory before he even sat down for his Tour Championship press conference.

The runaway World No. 1 completed a brilliant week at East Lake on Sunday night, closing with a 66 to finish 16-under par and three shots clear of Viktor Hovland and claim his second FedEx Cup in three years.

But while Scheffler's latest triumph was another significant addition to his already remarkable CV, it was his post-round beer that provided one of the funniest moments of the evening.

Asked what he planned to eat and drink to celebrate his victory in Atlanta, the 30-year-old revealed that he had already enjoyed his first beer in a long time – much to the surprise of his wife Meredith and manager Blake Smith.

"Gosh, I don't know. Probably a cheeseburger. I'm a big cheeseburger guy," Scheffler said when asked about his dinner plans. 

"Cheeseburger, fries, maybe a milkshake if they've got one hiding back there.

"I had a beer for the first time in a long time. It just sounded good."

Scheffler explained that, after walking off the 18th green, he was ushered towards his media commitments and realised he had a brief window before the interviews began.

"I got in there, these guys are trying to get me to do media and all this stuff," he said. 

"I was like, how much time do we really have? They're like we've got a couple minutes. 

"All right, let me go inside and get some air conditioning.

"There was an open bar inside, and I'm like, all right, I'm grabbing a beer. It tasted great."

The confession prompted an amusing reaction from those closest to him.

"I don't really drink very often. My wife and my manager were like, wow, I haven't seen you have a beer in a long time," Scheffler said.

"Well, season's over now. I'm going to have a beer. Well-earned beer."

It was difficult to argue.

Scheffler's three-shot victory was the 22nd of his PGA Tour career and his third win of the season. 

The $10 million prize also pushed his career earnings beyond $130 million and saw him move ahead of Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour's all-time career money standings. 

Woods' joint record of 82 PGA Tour victories alongside late great Sam Snead remains a distant target, but Scheffler continues to rewrite the record books at a remarkable rate.

His latest success was made even more special by having his family alongside him.

Scheffler was greeted behind the 18th green by Meredith and their two young sons, Bennett and Remy, before speaking about the importance of having his family travel with him.

"It's pretty fun," Scheffler said during his victory interview with CBS' Amanda Balionis. 

"We're at a stage right now where the boys are able to travel and Mer's able to come out every week."

He also offered a glimpse into the less glamorous side of life on the PGA Tour with two young children.

"Parts of it are very tough when you're setting up Pack 'n Plays, tents in the middle of the night, sound machines, trying to get the air conditioning working when you're across the pond, little stuff like that that people don't see," he said.

"Times can be tough, but I don't think Mer and I would trade it for anything. It's fun to be able to travel as a family, and I'll soak it in as long as I can."

After another extraordinary season, Scheffler certainly had plenty to celebrate – and apparently, a cold beer was the first item on the list.
