Scottie Scheffler's caddie reveals details of $1bn LIV Golf chat: "Wow, this guy's just different"

Scottie Scheffler's caddie Ted Scott says the the four-time major champion would have rejected a $1bn offer to join LIV Golf.

Scheffler became the world number one three months before the breakaway tour launched. 

LIV were successful in luring away major champions Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith and Phil Mickelson with gargantuan signing-on fees. 

But according to Scheffler's long-time looper, the 30-year-old was never going to entertain an offer and would have even turned his nose up at $1bn.

"I mean, the guy, literally, when I first started working for him, was 19th in the world and he had a white golf bag," Scott said in a recent appearance on The Gravy and the Sleeze podcast.

"I didn't know him that well, and I asked him, I was like: 'Why don't you have sponsors?' 

"And he's like, 'Well, because I just want to play with the equipment that I want to play.' And I was like, 'Okay.'

"And then I remember whenever all the LIV stuff was going on, you know, he was number one in the world at the time, I didn't know, but I said, 'They're probably going to offer you like $250m to go over there.'

"And he said, 'I don't care what they offer me. They can offer me a billion dollars. I'm going to play where the best players are because I just want to beat people.'

"I was like, 'Wow, this guy's just different,' you know."

Scheffler has undoubtedly established himself as the most dominant player since Tiger Woods since his breakout 2022 season.

He has won four major championships (2022 Masters, 2024 Masters, 2025 PGA Championship, 2025 Open) and 18 PGA Tour titles. 

His most recent victory, the Tour Championship at East Lake, saw him crowned the FedEx Cup champion for the second time in his career.

Scheffler scooped $10m for the win and leapfrogged the aforementioned Woods in all-time PGA Tour earnings. 

"The $10m doesn't matter to that guy," added Scott.

"And you know, if we were in the pool playing volleyball, he would want to beat you just as bad as he wants to beat you at the FedEx Cup.

"You know, that's the essence of who Scottie is and that's what he loves. 

"So I think partially part of his superpower is that the money doesn't distract him."

Scott's comments come at a particularly worrying time for LIV Golf. 

The league is facing its biggest crisis since its launch in 2022 after Saudi Arabia's PIF withdrew its financial backing.

LIV has since secured a new lead investor, but the deal is yet to be finalised.

The league has cut the majority of its staff and is reportedly facing the prospect of bankruptcy.

LIV is nevertheless pushing ahead with plans for a revamped 2027 season, with a reported 10-event schedule and players set to become majority equity holders in the league.
