Tiger Woods news conference ahead of Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods' press conference lasted 34 minutes. 

In truth, we didn't learn a great deal. 

But here's a re-cap:

Woods is asked about what his motivation is to contribute to the future of the PGA Tour after the last few years of unprecedented disruption in the men's game. 

Woods says that he got the chance to live out his dream and make it to the world number one. 

"This is a different opportunity to make an impact on our Tour," he says. 

"I did it with my golf clubs and made a putter here or there and now I've got the opportunity to do it in a different way."

Tiger Woods confirms that he won't participate in the first few matches of TGL, but he will be in attendance at every Jupiter Links match in season two. 

Woods says he has not been asked about succeeding Keegan Bradley as the 2027 United States Ryder Cup captain. 

Woods turned down the role for Bethpage Black and is the favourite to lead the red, white and blue when the matches head to Adare Manor in Ireland in two years' time. 

Tiger Woods was part of the search to find Brian Rolapp, who was announced as the PGA Tour's first chief executive earlier in the year. 

Woods was part of the search committee to find Jay Monahan's successor. 

Woods says Rolapp has "delivered in spades".

So far, we have learned that Tiger's rehab is not going as fast as he would've liked. 

But it's easier to overcome than a fusion surgery, according to Woods. 

He has been cleared to chip and putt and won't play in the PNC Championship with his son Charlie later this month. 

Woods has also refused to divulge a target date for a return. 

Tiger Woods is asked about Scottie Scheffler's consistency over the last few years. 

Wood says he appreciates what the 29-year-old has done since his breakout 2022 season. 

"I hope everyone else does," he says of Scheffler. 

Woods adds that he enjoys watching Scheffler hit irons more than any other part of his game. 

Woods is pressed again about his future schedule. 

He says he just wants to get back to playing golf before thinking about competition. 

"I haven't played golf in a very long time," he says with a smile. 

Woods confirms that he will not play in the parent/child PGA Tour event later this month with his teenage son Charlie. 

"It wouldn't be fair to another team," says Woods. 

In recent weeks there has been speculation that the PGA Tour will dramatically reduce their schedule to 20-2022 events from 2027. 

Woods is chairman of the future competition committee. 

He says there have been three meetings held so far about making changes. 

"It's up to us at the committee to try and make it all works and keep the players informed about what could happen," he says. 

"We're being very transparent."

Woods adds: "The Tour could be better."

As mentioned, Woods turns 50 later this month, which means that he is eligible to play on the senior circuit in 2026. 

The first question for Woods is whether or not he will play on the PGA Tour Champions in 2026. 

Woods jokes that he'll play 25 events next year, drawing laughs from reporters, but he's taking his recovery one step at a time. 

Woods adds that he has recently received clearance to chip and putt.

Justin Thomas was in the field, but was replaced by England's Aaron Rai. 

Thomas had back surgery similar to Tiger Woods after the Ryder Cup and will miss some PGA Tour events at the beginning of next season. 

The 32-year-old told No Laying Up this week he feels his recovery is going well. 

He revealed US Ryder Cup players had an argument with the green staff over the speed of the greens at Bethpage Black. 

It will be interesting to see which Tiger Woods shows up today. 

Will we get a happy, jovial Tiger? 

Or the more serious Tiger that keeps his cards close to his chest?

In recent weeks there has been plenty of speculation that Woods will confirm whether or not he will play on the PGA Tour Champions. 

Woods turns 50 on 30 December and will be eligible for the over-50s circuit in 2026.
