Rory McIlroy schedule 2026: When and where the Masters champ is playing next

Rory McIlroy is taking a break from the sport after the men's major season came to an end.

The Northern Irishman, now 37, has enjoyed another stellar year in which he enhanced his reputation as one of Europe's greatest ever golfers.

He began the season, as ever, in the Middle East before turning his attentions to the PGA Tour.

Before teeing up in defence of The Masters in April, McIlroy played in six events, with his best finish a share of second at the Genesis Invitational.

There were fears McIlroy would struggle at Augusta National after he was forced to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March with a back injury.

Although he returned to action at The Players Championship, it was evident McIlroy was far from his best.

Yet he was able to defend his Masters title, becoming only the third golfer after Sir Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to achieve the feat.

McIlroy finished one shot clear of world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Since then, McIlroy's season has petered out somewhat, with the six-time major champion unable to truly contend for another victory.

He shared seventh place at the PGA Championship, finished 32nd at the U.S. Open and ended up 40th on the leaderboard at The Open.

He will not be back in action until later this month.

McIlroy revealed after The Open that he no longer has the same enthusiasm for playing on the PGA Tour that he once did.

He is unlikely to play all three of the PGA Tour's play-off events and will likely skip the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

It remains to be seen whether he will tee up at the BMW Championship, but he is likely to return at the Tour Championship.

McIlroy will then turn his attentions back to Europe, teeing up at the Amgen Irish Open before playing in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

We can expect McIlroy to play a limited schedule around the majors in 2027.

He previously said: "Look, I’m not getting any younger. If I want to play competitively for another 10 years – like Justin Rose has, for example – I have to remember that I’m not 23 anymore and I can’t play that schedule forever.

"So I think to try to have the longevity that I want to have, I’m going to have to cut back my schedule a little bit over these next few years to make sure I stay injury-free and I play up until the point that I want to."
