Tiger Woods' PGA Tour Champions move comes with major warning

Michael Kim has warned that Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions may not be the instant financial jackpot many fans expect.

Tiger Woods could be the biggest name ever to join the PGA Tour Champions.

But PGA Tour pro Michael Kim believes his arrival would not automatically deliver the financial windfall many golf fans are predicting.

Woods' competitive future remains uncertain after another difficult year for the 15-time major champion.

The former World No.1 was involved in a car crash in Florida at the end of March, and later sought treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Switzerland.

Woods' long-running back problems have also made it increasingly difficult for him to walk 18 holes, prompting renewed speculation that the 50-year-old could eventually end his legendary golf career on the PGA Tour Champions.

Golf carts are permitted on the senior circuit, potentially making it a more realistic option for Woods as he manages the physical demands of professional golf.

Despite losing his driving license following his car crash and DUI arrest earlier this season, Woods will still be able to ride in a golf cart.

That prospect on the Champions Tour has already generated huge excitement among golf fans.

However, one-time PGA Tour winner Kim has offered a reality check on what Woods' arrival could actually mean financially.

Michael Kim warns Tiger Woods could create a problem

There has been plenty of speculation that Woods joining the over 50s Champions Tour would immediately transform the circuit's finances.

But Kim is not fully convinced.

Responding to the debate on X, the World No.64 explained that a Woods appearance would only become a major financial boost if tournament organisers had enough time to prepare in advance for his participation.

"Lots of Tiger comments. It sounds like a massive financial boost immediately but in actuality it's not that simple," Kim wrote.

In the eyes of Kim, if the joint-record 82-time PGA Tour winner announces his appearance at short notice, then Champions Tour events will likely have little time to sell additional hospitality packages or attract sponsors based on his presence.

Instead, they could suddenly face much larger crowds and additional costs.

Kim highlighted the need for extra parking and security at venues that may not be equipped to handle the attention Woods would attract.

"It's a lot of logistical stuff that the tournament has to organize quickly for not a ton of immediate dollars," added Kim.

Woods could still transform the PGA Tour Champions

Kim did acknowledge that the situation would be very different if Woods became a regular presence on the senior circuit, which is currently headlined by the likes of Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Steven Alker, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Michael Block.

"If he comes back each year that's obviously a whole different story," Kim concluded of Woods on the Champions Tour.

A regular Woods schedule would give tournaments time to plan, expand hospitality, attract sponsors and prepare for larger crowds.

The television impact could be even greater.

Woods remains one of the biggest names in golf, and his return to competitive action would attract viewers far beyond the traditional Champions Tour audience.

His first few appearances will potentially rival some PGA Tour events for attention.

Woods' decision remains the big question

For now, there is no guarantee Woods will make the move.

His health remains the biggest question, and the 15-time major champion has not committed to a PGA Tour Champions schedule.

If he does eventually tee it up on the senior circuit, Kim's comments suggest fans should not expect an instant financial revolution.

A late Woods appearance could create significant logistical challenges.

But if Tiger commits to the Champions Tour properly, the impact could be enormous.
