Tony Romo's nightmare day on the golf course ends with arrest after Wisconsin Amateur

Tony Romo endured one of the toughest days of his golfing life after the former NFL quarterback was arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) just hours after completing the final round of the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.

The CBS NFL analyst, widely regarded as one of the best golfers outside the professional ranks, struggled throughout the 72-hole championship at West Bend Country Club before reportedly being stopped by police on a Milwaukee highway on Thursday evening.

According to reports, Romo was pulled over by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office at around 6pm local time and was arrested after performing poorly during field sobriety tests. 

He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on 21 September.

The arrest capped a miserable day for the 46-year-old, who signed for a closing 82 to finish 35-over par at the 125th Wisconsin Amateur Championship. 

Romo posted rounds of 79, 78, 80 and 82 to finish tied for 73rd, 32 shots behind champion Spencer Turtz. 

His finish earned him just $60 and marked one of the poorest performances of his amateur golf career.

The disappointing result came as a surprise given Romo's golfing pedigree. 

Playing off a plus handicap that typically sits between +2.5 and +3, the former Dallas Cowboys QB has long established himself as one of the strongest celebrity golfers in the world.

Only a week earlier, Romo had finished sixth at the American Century Championship, once again showcasing the quality that has seen him receive multiple sponsor invitations into professional golf events.

Romo won the American Century Championship in 2018, 2019 and 2022. 

Since retiring from the NFL, Romo has competed in four PGA Tour events, including two appearances at the 2018 and 2019 Corales Puntacana Championship, the 2019 AT&T Byron Nelson and the 2019 Safeway Open. 

Although he failed to make the cut on each occasion, his best effort came with a 4-over-par total at the 2019 Safeway Open.

He has also teed it up three times on the Korn Ferry Tour, again missing the cut each time, and has become a familiar face at PGA Tour pro-ams and celebrity tournaments.

Romo is also well known for his close friendship with World No.1 Scottie Scheffler. 

The NFL legend claims to have played approximately 500 rounds of golf with the four-time major champion down the years.

There are rumours that Romo could look to pursue a career on the PGA Tour Champions when he becomes eligible in 2030. 

But on recent evidence, his game will likely need some serious improvement if he's to mix it with a number of former major champions on the circuit. 

Despite this week's struggles, Romo remains one of the most accomplished amateur golfers among former professional athletes and has regularly tested himself against elite competition.

CBS, where Romo has worked as the lead NFL analyst since 2017, has not publicly commented on his arrest.

According to local reports, the alleged offence is believed to be Romo's first operating while intoxicated (OWI) charge. 

If convicted, he could face a suspension of his driving licence and financial penalties under Wisconsin law.
