Why is Bryson DeChambeau banned from playing in the Presidents Cup?

Bryson DeChambeau will have no part to play in this week's Presidents Cup at Medinah, despite being one of the biggest names in American golf.

While Brandt Snedeker's United States team prepares to face Geoff Ogilvy's International side, DeChambeau has been keeping himself busy elsewhere, launching his new $100,000 Bryson's Backyard Games competition on social media.

But why isn't DeChambeau at Medinah with Team USA?

The reason is his continued involvement with LIV Golf.

Despite remaining in talks over a potential LIV 2.0 contract, DeChambeau is still suspended by the PGA Tour.

The Presidents Cup is run and hosted by the PGA Tour, meaning LIV Golf players are ineligible to compete.

That applies to both American and International players currently competing on LIV Golf. 

As a result, DeChambeau cannot be selected by Snedeker for the United States team this week.

That has been the case for the big-hitting American ever since he first put pen to paper on a deal with LIV Golf four years ago. 

That season he voiced his frustration at not having a chance to qualify for Davis Love's 2022 team at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. 

"I personally think that the team events are only hurting themselves by not allowing us to play, not allowing us to qualify through some capacity, in some facet," DeChambeau told reporters ahead of LIV Golf Chicago in 2022. 

DeChambeau is not the only big name missing the 2026 Presidents Cup because of the LIV Golf divide, with the International team particularly affected.

Australian Lucas Herbert and Chilean Joaquin Niemann are among notable absentees, while former Open champions Cameron Smith and Louis Oosthuizen are also forced to sit out.

Marc Leishman, Abraham Ancer, Sebastian Munoz, Charl Schwartzel and Carlos Ortiz are among other LIV players who will not compete at Medinah.

Despite the LIV-related absences, both teams contain plenty of star quality.

USA going for 11 in a row

Snededer's Americans will be looking to continue their dominance of the competition with an 11th win in a row.

Meanwhile, Ogilvy's Internationals are chasing just their second outright Presidents Cup victory.

Their only previous win came at Royal Melbourne, Australia, in 1998.

The contest was tied in 2003 in South Africa, when Tiger Woods and Ernie Els could not be separated in a playoff before darkness forced the match to be declared a draw.

DeChambeau's Presidents Cup record

DeChambeau has played in the Presidents Cup once before.

His only appearance came in 2019 where Tiger Woods captained the United States to a 16-14 victory.

Woods also competed and went unbeaten, finishing with a 3-0 record.

DeChambeau only took half a point from his two matches that week. 

Why can DeChambeau play in the Ryder Cup?

There is an important distinction between the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.

LIV Golf players remain eligible to represent the United States in the Ryder Cup under the current rules.

The Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe, rather than the PGA Tour.

DeChambeau has represented the USA three times in the Ryder Cup — in 2018, 2021 and 2025.

He was part of the winning team in 2021, but lost out in 2018 and 2025.

The next Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in Ireland in September 2027, with DeChambeau highly likely in contention for Jim Furyk's United States team.

For now, however, the Presidents Cup will take place without him.
