Donald Trump has described Rory McIlroy as a “legend” after the Northern Irishman successfully defended his title at The Masters.

McIlroy produced a composed final-round 71 to secure a one-shot victory over world number one Scottie Scheffler, finishing at 12-under par. The triumph marks his second Masters title and the sixth major championship of his career.

In doing so, the 36-year-old became just the fourth player in the tournament’s 90-year history to win back-to-back titles at Augusta National, further cementing his place among the modern greats of the game.

United States President Trump, who has previously played golf with McIlroy, shared his praise on Truth Social.

“Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!” Trump wrote.

“He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND!”

McIlroy’s latest success moves him level with England's Sir Nick Faldo on six major titles and one clear of Seve Ballesteros.

The world number two now closes in on the next group in the all-time rankings — Harry Vardon, Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer — all tied on seven majors.

Trump also looked ahead to McIlroy’s next expected appearance at Trump National Doral later this month.

“I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral,” Trump wrote.

“The quality of Professional Golfers today has become extraordinary, each and every one of them. They should all be proud of the way they played at The Masters this weekend!”

While McIlroy’s performance on the course underlined his dominance, it was his emotional victory speech that provided one of the defining moments of the week.

An emotional McIlroy thanked his wife Erica, daughter Poppy and his parents Rosie and Gerry for their unwavering support in shaping both his career and character.

Looking towards the gallery, his voice faltered as he paid tribute to his family, who had walked every step of the journey with him throughout the week.

“They have to put up with me at home — and trust me, sometimes that’s not easy,” he said with a smile.

“But they’ve been my biggest supporters. This has definitely become Poppy’s favourite week of the year. I don't know if it's because of the Par 3 Tournament or because it's the all you can eat ice cream in the players services building..."

He then turned his attention to his parents, who were present at Augusta — a particularly poignant moment given they were unable to attend his 2025 Masters victory that completed the career Grand Slam.

Struggling to hold back tears, McIlroy reflected on their influence.

“I had to convince them to come this year because they thought the reason I won last time was because they weren’t here,” he said.

“I’m glad we proved that wrong. Mum and dad, I owe everything to you. You are the most wonderful parents. If I can be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.”

The victory not only reinforced McIlroy’s status at the top of the modern game, but also highlighted the personal journey behind his continued success — one built on family, resilience and an enduring ability to deliver on golf’s biggest stage.
