Rory McIlroy had absolutely no idea where his golf ball landed.

But he got a helping hand from this eagle-eyed spectator at The K Club on 7 September.

The moment arrived during the first round of the 2023 Irish Open on the DP World Tour

McIlroy, 34, was playing his first round alongside American Billy Horschel and was having what he later described as 'an average day'.

In the footage captured by @franberry, McIlroy walks over to the juicy rough alongside his caddie Harry Diamond and tries to find his TP5x

Horschel also offers some help but one fan behind the gallery rope knows exactly where it is.

Initially, McIlroy thought his golf ball was plugged inside an area marked GUR.

"It's this side," voices can be heard saying. McIlroy still had no clue and gestured for the spectator to come to his aid.

"Let him in," added Horschel. It only took the spectator a few seconds to find the golf ball. And wasn't he delighted?

McIlroy went on to post an opening round of 3-under 69 in Straffan, Co. Kildare.

In his post-round press conference, he confirmed the R&A were seriously considering hosting the Open outside of the UK.

The Ulsterman threw his weight behind the idea of Portmanock hosting golf's oldest major, describing it as 'amazing'.

In other McIlroy news he talked up the strength of Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup team.

He also laid out his ground rules for the PGA Tour-PIF/LIV Golf truce.

The four-time major champ was also warned by Donald to 'take it easy' as he is going on a stag do a week before the Ryder Cup.
