Who is Rory McIlroy's caddie? Meet Harry Diamond

Rory McIlroy's caddie is currently Harry Diamond.

Diamond has been McIlroy's friend since childhood and his caddie since 2017.

McIlroy worked with J.P. Fitzgerald when he turned professional in 2007. 

Before Diamond, Fitzgerald had been McIlroy's caddie for nine years and was present for many of his major championship wins.

Diamond has been by McIlroy's side for several important victories as well, including the 2019 Players Championship. 

McIlroy also credited Diamond for his input when he claimed the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour. 

At the 72nd hole, Diamond convinced McIlroy to take a drop instead taking on a risky shot. It was their sixth win together.

Why did Rory McIlroy split with J.P. Fitzgerald?

The exact reason for Rory McIlroy's split with his former caddie, J.P. Fitzgerald, is not publicly known.

But in interviews following the split, McIlroy indicated that it was a mutual decision and that he was grateful for the years they spent together. 

McIlroy also mentioned that he wanted a fresh perspective on his game, which may have played a role in the decision to part ways with Fitzgerald.

McIlroy hired Diamond shortly after the 2017 split and has been working with him ever since.

The decision appears to have worked out well for McIlroy, as he has continued to perform at a high level.

Is Harry Diamond good at golf?

Diamond  is a good golfer in his own right, but he is not a professional player.

He played golf at a high level as a junior and was a member of the same golf club as McIlroy growing up.

However, he ultimately decided not to pursue a career as a professional golfer and instead became a full-time caddie for McIlroy.

What does Harry Diamond do?

As a caddie, Diamond's job is to provide support and advice to McIlroy during tournaments, helping him to make strategic decisions. 

He provides yardages, wind direction, offers club selection choices and helps read putts. 

Diamond's knowledge of the game and his close personal relationship with McIlroy make him an effective caddie.

The two have developed a strong working relationship over the years.

McIlroy's last major championship victory came in 2014. The winless spell has led some to criticise McIlroy to continue working with Diamond. 

It led to McIlroy publicly defending his decision to work with Diamond in September 2022.
