TaylorMade launches new game improvement iron

New! TaylorMade SpeedBlade irons

TAYLORMADE has this morning launched its brand new game improvement SpeedBlade iron.

The brand claims its latest iron launches higher, flies further and feels better than any other game improvement iron in TaylorMade's history.

The Speed Pocket, which also features on TaylorMade’s RocketBladez irons, has been widened and lengthened and is now in the shape of a handle bar in the 3-7 irons. This gives golfers more clubface area toward the toe and heel that promotes a high launch angle, strong ball flight and better feel, according to TaylorMade.

The Speed Pocket also features a cut-through slot internally, which allows for more flex and rebound on the bottom part of the face, making the SpeedBlade iron the fastest face TaylorMade has ever created, measuring right up to the COR limit.

“The Speed Pocket performs where golfers need it most,” said Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s director of iron, wedge and putters development.

“Our research indicates that 72% of shots by 5-25 handicap golfers are impacted below the center of the face. That typically results in low-launching shots of inconsistent distance. The Speed Pocket helps you launch those low-impact shots on a consistently higher, longer carrying and softer-landing flight.”

“Five years ago we challenged ourselves to create the best iron we could,” added Bazzel. “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned since then and created our most complete iron ever in the SpeedBlade.”

As well as a high launch and faster ball speeds, the SpeedBlade is designed with progressive shaping engineered to offer a performance suited to its role in a golfer's bag.

Long irons feature a larger topline to inspire more confidence at address, as well as the new handle-bar Speed Pocket. In addition the multi-material badge design, the polymer material inside the Speed Pocket is designed to reduce vibrations and offer improved sound and feel.

The short irons don't have a Speed Pocket but they do feature a thinner topline and sole to allow players to work and flight the ball more.

TaylorMade has also ensured SpeedBlade irons close the gaps in your set. Long irons are designed to go higher and longer and close the gap between your longest iron and shortest fairway wood, but they have also designed three wedges to prevent distance gaps nearer the green.

SpeedBlade Attack, Sand and Lob wedges have been designed with a traditional Tour shape and blade construction to not only fit the eye of a player, but also fit a gap in their bag. The sand and lob wedges feature TaylorMade's ATV (All Terrain Versatility) engineered to produce better feel, spin and control from a variety of lies around the green.

Each wedge has a heavier steel shaft than a standard SpeedBlade iron, to further improve short game performance and consistency.

Although TaylorMade is not making any distance guarantees, it does say the new SpeedBlade 6-iron travelled more than ten yards farther and 4% higher than the 2009 TaylorMade Tour Burner iron.

"Five years ago we challenged ourselves to create the best iron we could," said Bazzel. "We've taken everything we've learned since then and created our most complete iron ever in the SpeedBlade."

SpeedBlade irons are available in 8-iron sets (4-AW) and are equipped with a stock 85-gram steel shaft (RRP £599) or a 75-gram (stiff), 65-gram (regular), 55-gram (senior), or 45-gram (ladies) graphite shaft (RRP £699). SpeedBlade irons are available from October 4.
