Upswing Golf Junior Set

RRP: £449-£899

Set size: 5-12 pieces (including stand bag)

Upswing was founded by industry experts Justin Giles and Kevin Mayoux on the simple premise that as kids grow, their clubs should with them.

Much like adult golfers can swap shafts as their swing develops, Upswing's junior clubs feature interchangeable components that allow kids to play longer clubs without it affecting the swing weight or head characteristics they've likely become used to.

Upswing's offering comes in six distinct sets, made up of three different sizes and two colour schemes to appeal to both boys and girls. The brand's online fitting tool allows parents to immediately pinpoint the set that's the right size for their kid, with sizes starting at Junior (for newcomers up to 42" in height), progressing through Junior Varsity (45" to 51") and finally into Varsity (for players between 54" and 66").

Once a player progresses out of each size, parents can purchase a growth kit, made up of between three and four new assembled clubs and a set of new shafts, to compensate for their needs.

The irons and drivers come with high-quality heads designed to promote launch and accuracy, with junior-specific shafts developed by UST-Mamiya.

What factors should I consider when selecting the right golf clubs for my child?

The key factor in selecting the right golf clubs for your child is making sure the clubs you're buying are the appropriate size. Clubs that are too big or too small for a child can make it far harder for them to play the game, leading to frustration on their part and stunted development.

It's also worth considering their playing level as they grow up and progress. Most junior golf clubs are engineered to help newcomers to the sport get the ball up in the air as easy as possible. This is great for most kids who are just starting out, but as a child progresses into their teenage years and gets more skilled, more specialised clubs may be needed to get the most out of their game.

What age-specific features do junior golf sets typically include?

The key difference between junior golf sets and adult clubs is the components they use. Kids naturally don't swing a golf club as fast as adults, and as such junior golf clubs have lighter, more flexible shafts that help the club generate more speed to hit the ball further.

Because most kids are also just developing their hand-eye co-ordination as they start to play, the key aim of most junior golf clubs is to aid launch and distance as much as possible. This means they'll typically be very forgiving and light, enabling more kids to make good contact, hit the ball further and straighter, and make the game more fun.

Are there specific training techniques or drills that can help young golfers improve faster?

The best way to get a young golfer interested and developing in the sport is to fuel their love of playing. This means that above all, golf should be fun. The more time they spend out on the course, the more they'll hopefully progress.

If your child is getting particularly serious about the game, we'd always recommend enlisting the services of a qualified golf coach, who are best-prepared to teach junior players the skills and patterns needed to play their best golf as they grow up.
