Rory McIlroy’s surprise Singapore trip raises questions after TaylorMade sale twist

McIlroy was spotted at Sentosa Golf Club as a Singapore-based investment group reportedly explores a bid for his equipment sponsor.

Rory McIlroy’s surprise appearance in Singapore last week has sparked fresh speculation among golf fans, with two intriguing storylines potentially offering clues to the Northern Irishman’s visit.

The six-time major champion was spotted playing at the exclusive Sentosa Golf Club where he was followed closely by Becca De Foe (@beccadefoe), a popular Singapore-based golf and lifestyle content creator.

De Foe, who has built a substantial social media following by documenting her journey from beginner to avid golfer, shared a series of photos and videos from her time with the PGA Tour superstar last week.

McIlroy’s visit also included promoting and participating in a Paiza Golf Simulator Challenge hosted by Marina Bay Sands at Marquee Singapore.

However, with no Tour event taking place in Singapore last week, questions quickly emerged over why the World No.2 had made the trip.

One theory centres on the ongoing discussions surrounding TaylorMade’s potential sale, while the confirmed return of the Singapore Open to the DP World Tour schedule in 2027 provides another interesting angle.

Could McIlroy’s Singapore visit be linked to TaylorMade sale?

Pro Golf Critic has suggested McIlroy’s surprise visit to Singapore could have coincided with developments surrounding a potential TaylorMade sale.

Singapore-based private equity firm The Sylvan Group is reportedly exploring a bid for the equipment manufacturer, with backing from Reignwood Group.

TaylorMade is McIlroy’s long-standing equipment partner, making the timing of his visit an interesting talking point.

Reignwood Group, meanwhile, is the Chinese-based company that owns Wentworth in Surrey, home of the BMW PGA Championship and the DP World Tour’s headquarters.

McIlroy recently purchased a property at Wentworth with his wife, Erica, and their daughter, Poppy, adding another intriguing connection to the parties involved.

In a post on X, Pro Golf Critic suggested the reported interest in TaylorMade could help explain McIlroy’s otherwise unexpected Singapore appearance.

However, there is no confirmation that the potential deal had any bearing on McIlroy’s visit, and any connection between the two remains speculative. GolfMagic contacted TaylorMade for comment on the reported interest in the company, but the equipment manufacturer declined to comment.

Singapore Open confirmed for DP World Tour return in 2027

The DP World Tour has confirmed that the Singapore Open will return to its schedule in 2027, with Sentosa Golf Club once again set to host the tournament.

The announcement adds another layer of intrigue to McIlroy’s surprise appearance at the venue last week, although there is no confirmation that his visit was connected to the tournament’s return.

During his BMW PGA Championship press conference last month, the 37-year-old inadvertently let slip that both the Singapore Open and Hong Kong Open would be returning to the DP World Tour schedule in 2027.

Sentosa has hosted the Singapore Open 15 times between 2005 and 2026, making it a familiar venue for the tournament.

The event will once again be co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and Asian Tour, marking a significant development for professional golf in Singapore.

The Singapore Open was last staged as part of the European Tour schedule in 2012, with McIlroy among the players competing that week.

Since then, the tournament has been staged as a co-sanctioned event between the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.

With the Singapore Open confirmed to return to the DP World Tour schedule from 15-18 April 2027, McIlroy’s recent appearance at Sentosa Golf Club makes for an intriguing coincidence.

There is, however, no confirmation that his visit was connected to the tournament’s return.

The event is scheduled for the week after The Masters, where McIlroy will attempt to make history by becoming the first player to win the tournament three consecutive times.

Whether McIlroy chooses to jet from Augusta to Sentosa in the aftermath of golf’s first major of 2027 remains to be seen.

A trip to Asia would appear unlikely, particularly with the RBC Heritage – a PGA Tour Signature Event – scheduled to take place in the same week as the Singapore Open.

However, McIlroy has often skipped the Hilton Head tournament in recent years, meaning a return to Sentosa cannot be entirely ruled out.

TaylorMade exploring strategic options

TaylorMade is currently owned by South Korean private equity firm Centroid Investment Partners, which acquired the Carlsbad-based business in 2021.

McIlroy signed a long-term, multi-year equipment deal with TaylorMade in May 2017, following Nike’s decision to stop producing golf clubs and balls.

The agreement was initially reported as a 10-year partnership, meaning the Northern Irishman will reach a full decade with the brand in May 2027.

The company has made its equipment and apparel businesses available to potential suitors.

The process also includes Sun Day Red, the apparel brand developed in collaboration with Tiger Woods and launched in 2024.

TaylorMade president and CEO David Abeles confirmed last month that the company was actively considering its future ownership options.

Speaking to Sports Business Radio, Abeles told host Brian Berger that the company’s board was “in a process right now of exploring strategic options for the future of the company”.

He added that TaylorMade had attracted significant interest, expressing confidence that any eventual ownership transition would align with the company’s long-term growth strategy.

Abeles also stressed that the priority was making the right decisions for TaylorMade, Sun Day Red, its employees and its customers.

McIlroy returns to DP World Tour action with history on the line

McIlroy is set to return to action at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links, with the event marking the start of the DP World Tour Playoffs ahead of the following week’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Despite several notable absentees from the Abu Dhabi field, McIlroy has confirmed his participation as he bids to make more history on the DP World Tour.

The World No.2 currently sits third in the Race to Dubai standings, with two events remaining as he targets a record-equalling eighth European Tour Order of Merit title, matching Colin Montgomerie’s career haul.

Eugenio Chacarra currently leads the standings, with Patrick Reed in second. Both players are chasing their first Race to Dubai crown, along with the $2 million bonus awarded to the season-long winner.

With McIlroy still in contention, the final two events promise to provide a compelling conclusion to the DP World Tour season.

For now, the precise reason behind McIlroy’s Singapore trip remains unclear.

His simulator golf commitments provide an obvious explanation for part of the visit, while the confirmed return of the Singapore Open and the reported interest in TaylorMade offer two further talking points.

Whether the potential TaylorMade deal had anything to do with McIlroy’s appearance at Sentosa remains to be seen.
