Who says you need spikes to play your best?

While plenty thought that the days of spikeless golf shoes winning major golf tournaments were long behind us, Ryan Fox is keeping it real.

The Kiwi's victory at Royal Birkdale was notable for a couple of reasons from an equipment standpoint. In addition to giving Srixon its first driver victory at a major for three years, it also saw a spikeless shoe used in a major win for the first time in what feels like forever.

The shoe in question is, of course, the adidas Adizero ZG, a spikeless model that remains popular on tour thanks to its runner-inspired look, ultralight construction and responsive Lightstrike Pro cushioning.

Common wisdom would have it that spikeless shoes are simply not grippy enough to put up with the demands of a touring professional, and in some cases that may be the case.

However the firm, fast conditions at Royal Birkdale played perfectly to Fox's strengths, and only went to further prove that when the going is dry, modern spikeless shoes are more than capable of providing tour-level grip and stability when swinging at pro speeds.

The Adizero is, in fact, probably adidas' most popular silhouette on tour, also used by Ludvig Åberg and Collin Morikawa. However both the Swede and the American use a special spiked variant of the Adizero that isn't available to the public.

Fox, however, has chalked one up for the everyman, taking home the win in a pair of spikeless shoes that are exactly the same as you and I could buy down the shops today. More importantly, some older colourways of the exact same model are readily available for under £80, giving you the perfect chance to grab a bargain with genuine major-winning credentials.
