Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia were well in control of their match against Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau around the turn, but despite a mini fightback from the American duo, the Europeans clinched victory when Garcia holed for birdie on the 17th.

English duo Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton got their first point on the board for Europe with a hard-fought victory over Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler in match two, before Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari picked up their third point in a row together with victory over an out-of-form Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed.

The Americans salvaged some pride in the final match of the morning with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth ousting Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm.
