Marc Leishman wins Farmers Insurance Open

Marc Leishman won his fifth PGA Tour event on Sunday, as he claimed the Farmers Insurance Openat Torrey Pines.

A phenomenal seven-under par closing round of 65 saw Leishman beat 2017 winner Jon Rahm by one shot, with the Australian showcasing a putting masterclass.

Australia Day was well and truly in motion, with two Australians winning on Sunday, with Leishman joining fellow Aussie Lucas Herbert who won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Jon Rahm went into Sunday's final round with the overnight lead, but an awful start left the Spaniard in trouble, although his composure on the back nine to get within one of the lead was incredible.

Rory McIlroy also started poorly and failed to get himself back into contention, but he too salvaged his round to shoot three-under par to finish in third at his first tournament of the year.

Leishman on the other hand started his final round in epic fashion, with five birdies through his first eight holes, which rapidly flew him up the leaderboard.

Two more birdies at 11 and 13 saw the Australian strengthen his lead, although Rahm applied some pressure withan eagle at 13.

Leishman dropped a shot at 17 when his putter went cold for a brief moment, but he remained composed coming down the last, opting to lay-up to the par-5 18th green, before getting up-and-down for another birdie.

Rahm needed an eagle at the last and he found the green in two, elaving a very similar putt that saw him win the tournament back in 2017.

While Lieshman kept himself busy on the range, Rahm lined up his eagle putt, but it fell just a foot short for a tap-in birdie, handing the victory to Leishman, his first title since the CIMB Classic in October 2018.

Following his round, Leishman was congratulated by Woods, who had only just recently heard about the tragic death of his friend and NBA legend Kobe Bryant.
