Graeme McDowell has hit back at Sir Nick Faldo's comments about LIV Golf, saying the Hall of Famer 'doesn't know what he's talking about'.

McDowell is in Valderrama for the eighth event of the rival league's season.

It is the first 54-hole event played since the stunning news the PGA Tour and DP World Tour agreed to partner with LIV Golf's Saudi backers, the Public Investment Fund.

Faldo, 65, tore into LIV and claimed he stood by his previous criticism. Despite the surprise merger between the organisations, the golf legend doesn't believe the breakaway tour will last.

"Nobody's interested," Faldo said in his pre-tournament news conference at The Belfry before his hosting duties at the British Masters.

It's clear Faldo believes the team element is a bit fake. Faldo also took the time to defend Rory McIlroy.

Then he dropped one of the funniest truth bombs about the Netflix documentary Full Swing.

McDowell told the bunkered podcast he's taking Faldo's comments with a pinch of salt, adding:

"I've seen it and I've heard it and I've read it and, listen, we know what opinions are. Everyone's got one, right?
"Nick's there at the British Masters protecting [his event]. That's the biggest takeaway for me over the last 12 months. People are going to protect what they're going to protect in the moment.
"I see players saying things and all they're doing is protecting their territory. They're protecting the tours that they've chosen to defend. It doesn't mean they're bad guys. It doesn't mean that they're wrong, or right, or whatever."

McDowell continued:

"I'm at that point where I don't even hold anything against anybody anymore because all they're doing is protecting their turf.
"Nick Faldo was my hero in the nineties. I had multiple Pringle sweaters in my closest. He'll always be a legend to me. But he hasn't been out here. He hasn't come out to see this for himself. He doesn't know what he's talking about."

McDowell also touched upon that sensational press conference at Centurion Club in LIV's maiden event.

The Northern Irishman resigned from the PGA Tour 30 minutes before his tee time.

"Answering the questions that we tried to answer was the hardest thing in this whole deal," he said. "Because as a professional golfer you’re just not equipped to be able to handle that type of scrutiny, that type of spotlight and that type of abuse."

McDowell said he hasn't burned any bridges since joining LIV and he believes there aren't any relationships that 'aren't fixable'.

He was likely referring to Sergio Garcia patching things up with McIlroy. The duo were once extremely close but fell out publicly over LIV.
