PGA Tour Champions set to make its Portuguese debut
The new Els Club Vilamoura will take on hosting rights for the new $3 million tournament.
The Algarve now has another high-profile tournament to add to its growing championship golf pedigree, following today's announcement that Vilamoura will host the newest stop in the PGA Tour Champions calendar.
The new Portugal Invitational, set to take place on the week of July 27, will host 78 of the most legendary names in the 50+ category, who will shoot it out for a $3 million prize fund.
Els Club Vilamoura, which re-opened last year as the newest flagship course in the South African's growing collection of design projects, will host the tournament.
"We're excited to partner with Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, Turismo do Algarve and Ernie Els to bring PGA TOUR Champions to Portugal," said Miller Brady, President of PGA Tour Champions.
"Our Tour showcases some of the greatest names in golf and we know fans across Portugal and Europe will relish the opportunity to see these players compete on one of the region's premier golf courses."
“Whenever our firm designs a golf course, we always have an eye on what makes it a successful tournament venue, so this was always a big part of our plans for The Els Club Vilamoura," continued Els, himself a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

The inaugural Portugal Invitational will get underway on July 31.
