Colin Montgomerie wins playoff after Bernhard Langer has MARE in sand!

Colin Montgomerie won his first PGA Champions Tour event in more than two years with playoff victory over Bernhard Langer at the Invesco QQQ Championship.

Montgomerie fired a course-record 63 earlier in the day to post the clubhouse target of 14-under par, and it was soon matched by Langer, who carded a 67.

The tournament was decided at the first time of asking, however, as the German took four shots to get his ball out of the sand and it presented the Scot with the simple task of finishing the job off with a par for the win.

“How often does that happen?” Montgomerie said. “How often does Bernhard Langer take four in the bunker?”

The win marks Montgomerie's seventh PGA Champions win of his career.

"You start five behind, you obviously do the best you can," said Montgomerie.

"I was starting in eighth position. You hope you do OK, but not with the guys ahead of me — the Langers, the [Retief] Goosens, the [Scott] Parels, some great players. Just so happens you score 63 and hole a putt from the back of the green."

Tommy Tolles and Retief Goosen finished one stroke shy of the playoff on 13-under par.

Montgomerie moves up to fourth in the Charles Schwab Championship heading into this week's season-ending tournament.

Langer lies in third, with Jerry Kelly chasing Scott McCarron out in front.

Montgomerie can still win the season-long race, but will likely require a consecutive victory on Tour to get the job done.
