Many of us thought Dustin Johnson was on the verge of shooting a round of 55 at the Northern Trust two weeks ago, but one golfer by the name of Zander Hughes actually got there last week.

Hughes' incredible Guinness World Record round of 16-under 55 at South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks, Oklahoma, matches the lowest round of golf ever recorded by Rhein Gibson who shot the same score just down the road at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma some eight years ago.

I know what you're thinking... let's all go play our golf in Oklahoma.

As you can see from Hughes' sensational scorecard above, he started with a par before making a casual hole-in-one at the par-3 2nd, before making another par at the 3rd.

Then things really started to hot up the Central Oklahoma graduate with five consecutive birdies, an eagle and another birdie in the space of seven holes to move to 10-under par through 10 holes just like Johnson did at the Northern Trust on the PGA Tour last month. Sadly DJ went on to shoot a 60, but he did go on to win the tournament.

He added another birdie at the 12th to move to 11-under par, and then flew home with an eagle at 15 followed by three consecutive birdies to the house for a round of 16-under 55.

Hughes very nearly set the outright record for the lowest round of golf in the history of the game when his eagle chip agonisingly missed the cup.

Check it out in the video below...

"To do that on any golf course and record that score, it's just pretty mind blowing," Hughes told

"I always had that belief that I could maybe pursue golf as a career. Golf is such a mental game - you fight yourself all the time thinking if you can do it or if you can't do it.

"Pretty much what this does is it's just a positive boost that I can do it.

"I'm just blessed to be able to shoot a score like that and be part of history in some sort of way. It's very humbling."

Hughes' round is three strokes better than the lowest round ever recorded on the PGA Tour (12-under 58), which was set by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship. Stephan Jaeger also posted a 12-under 58 on the Korn Ferry Tour at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic.

A total of 11 players have recorded sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour, with Oliver Fisher the sole player on the European Tour when shooting a 59 at the 2018 Portugal Masters.
