REVEALED: Average driving distance for male amateur golfers in 2017
Believe it or not, the average driving distance for male amateurs is DOWN!
PGA Tour professionals might be crushing the ball further than ever on average, but the story actually reads a little differently in the amateur game.
According to data collected and analysed, the average distance for male amateur club golfers in 2017 was 208.1 yards - a decrease of six yards against 2016.
To put driving distance in the amateur game into perspective, the average was 200 yards back in 1996.

Other interesting stats from the latest USGA report include players with a handicap of 6 or better averaging 226 yards off the tee
Those with handicaps of 6-12 averaged 212 yards, 13-20 handicaps averaged 198 yards and 21 handicaps and higher averaged 188 yards.

The report claims 89% of the total shots were hit with a driver.
This information was measured at male and female clubs in the UK, and as many as 2,000 men's drives and 300 women's drives are used to collect each season's data.
The average driving distance for female club amateurs is 146 yards. Female golfers with a handicap of 6 or better average 195 yards.
