Tiger Woods returns to action this week for the first stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs, where he will battle it out in the Northern Trust at Liberty National. With the Northern Trust just around the corner, Woods announced on Monday that he will be returning to Liberty National in September to host a new amateurs-only tournament, the Nexus Cup.

TGR Live, the company that runs Woods' events, tweeted the news on Monday and the 15-time major champion then retweeted the message and added how excited he was to host the competition.

The tournament is scheduled for 24 - 25 September and is a two-day invite-only competition, and according to the press release it will be the "most exclusive amateur golf event in the world."

According to the release there will also be "an incredible array of prizes" that will be awarded to the field, including Rolex watches, exclusive experiences at Tiger Jam and the Hero World Challenge and even a dinner with Tiger Woods himself, plus more.

It was also announced that Gary Woodland, Henrik Stenson and Keegan Bradley are also set to make an appearance at the event.

We are yet to find out whether the event is male, female or will feature a mixture of both and the release also didn't state how large the field will be for the tournament or if it will be broadcasted anywhere.

Woods may be able to shed some more light on the tournament on Wednesday when he is scheduled to speak to the press following the Northern Trust Pro-Am at Liberty National.

Last year, Tiger Woods won the Tour Championship, the final event of the FedEx Cup and very nearly pipped Justin Rose to the trophy and the $10m prize, but Rose finished high enough to go home as the 2018 FedEx Cup winner.

This year, the FedEx Cup has a different format, where players will start the Tour Championship with a score based on their previous performances in the playoffs and the winner of the Tour Championship will be the FedEx Cup champion.
