The final major of the year and arguably the one everyone wants to win the most takes place in just a few weeks time, the Open Championship. The Claret Jug returns to Royal Portrush this year, where Francesco Molinari hopes to defend his title after taking home the prize at Carnoustie last year.

The Open Championship is arguably the biggest major of the four, but it remains in last place in terms of prize money. That won't bother the players in the slightest, as the prize money has been increased this year, with a record payout going to the winner.

The R&A recently announced that the purse for the Open Championship has been increased to $10.75 million, with the winner taking home $1.935 million.

Last year at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the total purse was $10.5 million and Francesco Molinari took home $1.89 million, along with the Claret Jug.

In June, Gary Woodland won the U.S Open at Pebble Beach and won $2.25 million from a $12.5 million purse. Brooks Koepka won $1.98 million from a total prize fund of $11 million at the PGA Championship and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods earned himself $2.07 million from a $11.5 million purse at the Masters.

Rory McIlory took home $2.25 million when he won The Players Championship earlier this year, the PGA Tour's flagship tournament. All four majors and The Players reached record highs for prize money this year.
