Phil Mickelson's former long-time caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay will take the bag of Matt Fitzpatrick at next week's Workday Charity Open and the following week's Memorial Tournament, which are both being staged at Muirfield Village.

Fitzpatrick, who has been looking for stand-in caddies since the PGA Tour's return during lockdown with his regular bagman Billy Foster still back home in England, revealed a short-term agreement was made with Mackay following a recent text message.

"The message said it was Bones, and he heard through the grapevine that I was in the market for a fill-in caddie," said Fitzpatrick. "I told him I was honoured that he was even reaching out."

Fitzpatrick's regular caddie Foster will likely take the bag once again when the Englishman lines up at the WGC - FedEx St Jude Invitational later this month.

The World No.26 has played some steady golf since returning to action from the lockdown with ties for 32nd and 14th at the Charles Schwab Challenge and RBC Heritage, but he then missed the cut at the Travelers Championship.

Mackay, who mutually parted ways with Mickelson in 2017 following a relationship that had stood the test of 25 years, decided to come out of caddying to become an on-course analyst for NBC / Golf Channel.

He also briefly caddied for Justin Thomas at the 2018 Sony Open.

But instead of walking the fairways and commentating on the world's best players, Mackay will now spend two weeks on Fitzpatrick's bag while out in Ohio for the next two weeks.

There has been a limit on the number of on-course analysts and commentators that can attend a PGA Tour event due the coronavirus pandemic, with most broadcasters currently commentating on the action from a studio away from the course.
