Paul Casey told a spectator to "shut it" during his match against Mackenzie Hughes at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and threatened to have him removed from Austin Country Club.

The Englishman lost his opening match at the WGC Match Play 3&2 to an impressive Hughes, who was eventually knocked out in the round of 16 by Sergio Garcia.

Following their match on Wednesday, a video clip went viral of Casey calling out a spectator who was purposely trying to distract the PGA Tour veteran on more than one occasion.

"Oi mate. Shut it, pal," said Casey as he stepped away from his ball. "He asked you nicely a minute ago and now I'm asking you, shut it, okay?"

Casey's caddie for the week Mark Fulcher - who had already warned the spectator once - then stepped in: "It's the last time we ask, otherwise you're out of here and I'll look forward to sending you out actually. I don't know why you're smirking because it's not big and it's not clever."

The spectator involved was clearly acting out of line and the fact that he found the situation funny just goes to show his lack of respect for the game and golf fans praised Casey for confronting him.

"I’m all in with Paul Casey now. Hope he runs the table," said one golf fan.

"Paul Casey is one of the best guys out there. Sucks to see people be so rude," said another.

"Should have kicked him out, guy has no class."
