Golf fans took to social media on Sunday in reaction to the seriously slow final at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play between Billy Horschel and Scottie Scheffler.

Horschel claimed a 2&1 victory over home favourite Scheffler, but the pair seemed to take a seriously long time to take their shots during Sunday's final, with Scheffler being the main culprit, who took more than three minutes over simple drops at both the 12th and 13th holes.

Many golf fans couldn't understand why the players hadn't been given a slow play warning, while even the Sky Sports Golf commentary team were taking digs at the American duo.

At the 16th hole, a phone went off in the limited crowd, which caused Scheffler to back away from his ball and reset.

"That's probably my wife trying to get hold of me. I'll tell her I'll be home soon to walk the dog," said on-course commentator Rich Beem.

Ewen Murray in the commentary box then said: "I'm surprised there's any battery left in the phone watching this final today."

After seeing the reaction the match caused on social media and having had to sit through and commentate on the slow-play antics at Austin Country Club, Murray also felt the need to apologise to golf fans on Twitter himself.

"Pleased for Billy Horschel, but it must have been a hard watch for you. For that I’m sorry. Today might be a lesson for Scottie and Billy. Their best golf won’t be played at that pace. No system, plan, no tempo or continuity. They’re better than that."

There were thousands of tweets from golf fans during Sunday's final and we've included a few of them for you to check out below.
