Earlier this year, Callaway Golf extended its impressive range of wedges by unveiling the JAWS Mack Daddy 5 wedges. Callaway Golf Chief Wedge Designer Roger Cleveland and his extensive R&D team have created a new JAWS Groove to take spin and control to the next level. The result is a wedge with total performance: premium shapes, striking finishes, outstanding feel, unique versatility and exceptional spin.

TECH

The JAWS MD5 features Callaway's proprietary new JAWS groove designed to a 37º wall angle, an extreme difference vs. the 5º used in MD4. This elevates the groove-edge sharpness to a new level, for maximum grip and spin from all types of lies. JAWS grooves are particularly effective from 80 yards and in, producing a player preferred “one hop and stop” trajectory.

JAWS MD5 also incorporates Callaway's proven Groove-In-Groove Technology. These milled Micro-Positive grooves are placed in the flat parts of the face for added surface roughness and grip. Three raised micro-ridges are featured between each groove, adding grip to the ball’s cover to increase spin on a variety of shots. This combination of JAWS grooves plus micro-grooves provides 84 different contact points to promote more spin.

It’s hard to save shots if you can’t predict how the ball will behave. Each JAWS groove is rendered to the tightest tolerances Callaway has ever achieved, promoting consistent spinrates from shot to shot. JAWS adds a higher level of consistency that inspires confidence for all scoring zone shots.

VERDICT

The previous MD4 model was very impressive but the new JAWS MD5 is another step up and it feels like a big one. The JAWS Mack Daddy 5 wedges combine phenomenal spin with fantastic feel.

The spin rate of the new JAWS MD5 is even better than its previous model and we absolutely loved the trajectory that the new wedges offer with full shots. You could really dial shots at the flag knowing that the ball was going to stop quickly and more importantly, consistently.

What was more impressive was the amount of spin that was being generated out of the rough. Of course it wasn't as controlled as a flushed shot off of the fairway, but you could still be pretty aggressive out of the rough and get a good amount of control.

The design of the JAWS MD5 is very clean and modern, making it very appealing with the ball at address. The offset is also very minimal which increases your confidence around the greens.

Although GolfMagic loves the design, the chrome finish does cause some glare when the sun is shining, so if that's something that puts you off then you may want to lean towards a different colour finish.

The feel of the MD5 is one of the best we have tested this year, up there with the TaylorMade MG2. The strike feels very pure on full-length shots, but you also get a really responsive feel from short chips around the green.

The range of bounce and grind options make it very easy for you to find the perfect wedge to suit your game and of course these wedges are available in Callaway Customs with 10 color zones and new medallion paint-fill color options and stamping choices, giving golfers more ways than ever to personalise each wedge and make it their own.

JAWS MD5 wedges lofted from 46º to 52º are slightly smaller compared to wedges lofted 54º and above, to create a natural shape-progression from the short-irons (8- and 9-) to the highest lofted wedges.

The 60º wedge was brilliant out of the bunkers and for flop shots out of the rough, but lacked a little forgiveness from full-length fairway shots, but this would be easily resolved had we got custom fitted for the wedges to get the best bounce and grind for our game.

The Callaway JAWS MD5 have an RRP of £149, which is on the premium end of the price scale but you get what you pay for in the sense that you'll struggle to find a wedge with a spin rate as good as the MD5 , unless you look towards wedges such as TaylorMade's MG2 or Titleist Vokey wedges.
