Multiple major champion handed surprise invite to BMW PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka has been added to the confirmed list of entries for next week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The five-time major champion has been handed a surprise invite to the DP World Tour's flagship event, and his inclusion adds extra star power to a field already packed with world-class players.

Rory McIlroy headlines the stellar field for one of the biggest tournaments of the year, with Koepka taking the number of major champions competing on the iconic West Course to 13.

The American is one of nine players from LIV Golf in the line-up, with European Ryder Cup stars Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton also featuring alongside 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed.

Koepka and Reed were overlooked by Team USA captain Keegan Bradley for this month's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, although Bryson DeChambeau managed to make the team on merit despite playing in only eight qualifying events.

DeChambeau is the only LIV Golf player on the American team as Koepka misses the Ryder Cup for the first time since making a winning debut at Hazeltine in 2016.

European captain Luke Donald will be able to meet up with 11 members of his side at Wentworth, with Sepp Straka the only absentee.

Koepka has struggled for form throughout a torrid season, going winless on the LIV Golf Tour while also missing the halfway cut in three of the four major championships.

The 35-year-old did impress at Oakmont in June as he posted a tie for 12th place, but he finished a lowly 31st in the LIV Golf standings with just two top-10s in his 12 starts.

He is also playing in this week's Amgen Irish Open at the K Club, while he will also return to the DP World Tour for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in early October.

Sergio Garcia WDs from Irish Open

Whilst the BMW PGA Championship field has been bolstered with Koepka's addition, this week's Irish Open has lost a major champion. 

Sergio Garcia had committed to the tournament at The K Club, but withdrew hours before European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald confirmed his six wildcards for the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black. 

Garcia had his heart set on a sensational return to Team Europe, but he will not be making his 11th appearance for the blue and gold. 

The former Masters champion exclusively told GolfMagic he did not feel in the right headspace to compete in Ireland. 

He will still be supporting Europe from his sofa, he said.
