Rory McIlroy delighted his legion of fans at The K Club as he snatched the Amgen Irish Open title after a stunning finish to the final round, edging out Joakim Lagergren in a playoff.

The Masters champion looked an unlikely winner as he needed to eagle the final hole in regulation to force extra holes, with Lagergren in the clubhouse on 17-under after posting a bogey-free 66.

But McIlroy produced a blockbuster finish to send the crowd into hysterics, rattling in a 30-foot putt for only the second eagle of the day at the 18th as he also carded a 66.

The top two returned to the 18th tee for a sudden-death playoff, and they could not be separated for two holes as they traded birdies, but Lagergren made the pivotal mistake on the third extra hole.

Lagergren had the advantage of being in the fairway with McIlroy in trouble in the rough on the right, but the Swede tugged his second shot too far left and watched in angst as his ball dribbled off the edge of the green and into the water.

McIlroy gouged his second safely onto the green and safely two-putted for a cast-iron birdie, and he was crowned champion moments later after Lagergren's chip missed the target.

"This has exceeded all of my expectations," said an emotional McIlroy afterwards. "I thought it was going to be a nice homecoming, obviously coming home with a green jacket and all that, but this has been absolutely incredible. I'm just so, so happy I could play the way I did this week for all of them and get the win.

"This is absolutely incredible. I love coming home, and I love playing in this atmosphere. Moments like these are the things you're going to remember well after your career is over. This is a really special day."

McIlroy's eagle putt on the 72nd hole will be replayed countless times for years to come, and he added: "I wanted to just be aggressive with it. It was such a cool moment, such a cool feeling for that to go in. That gave me a chance in the playoff.

"The way the 18th was playing today, it just felt like it was a case of who was going to blink first. Joakim hit a poor second shot into the third playoff hole and that opened the door for me. I'm just so happy to win my second Irish Open."

McIlroy had earlier made a clumsy start in heavy rain, a poor chip at the first leading to an opening bogey before he hit back with two monster putts for birdies, holing from around 40 feet on both the 2nd and 5th greens.

Despite struggling for consistency with his irons, McIlroy stayed in the hunt and added another birdie at the 9th to move into a share of the lead, and he made another big gain at 13, where his ball circled the entire cup before dropping.

But Lagergren seized the initiative when he hit one of the shots of the week at the long 16th, knocking a superb second to six feet and converting for eagle as he leapfrogged the leaders.

The cool Swede closed with a birdie to move two clear of the chasing pack, only for McIlroy to produce another memorable moment in his stellar career, prompting cheers that echoed around the Dublin region.

Rafa Cabrera Bello enjoyed an early highlight when the former Ryder Cup star made a spectacular ace at the short 3rd, and he was one of five players who shared the lead on the back nine, but he faded down the stretch and settled for a 67 and a tie for third with fellow Spaniard Angel Hidalgo (71).

Saddier's race is run

Saddier -12 (15)

You've got to feel for Adrien Saddier. The overnight leader has really struggled today and has not made a single birdie. He's scrambled hard, but a third bogey of the day see him slip to 12-under.

16:32
Lagergren leapfrogs the leaders!

Lagergren -16 (16)

Joakim Lagergren has just hit one of the shots of the week at the long 16th, lacing a fairway-wood from over 260 yards to six feet. That one flirted with the water, but he won't care a jot after rapping in the putt for eagle that takes him into the outright lead on -16.

Back on the tee, there's an F-bomb after McIlroy pulls his drive into trouble on the left and that will be a lay-up.

McIlroy escapes with a par at 15

McIlroy -15 (15)

Rory's drive at the 15th ends over over the red hazard line, but it somehow stays dry and he biffs an 8-iron to 40 feet. The birdie putt wanders four feet past, but he nails the return to stay at -15.

And it's just McIlroy and Cabrera Bello in the lead now as Hidalgo find sand from the tee at the short 14th, and he misses a six-footer for par to slip back to -14.

Ayora sets clubhouse target at 13-under

Ayora -13 (67)

Angel Ayora is the new clubhouse leader, closing out a 67 with a nice two-putt birdie at the last. He's in the house at 13-under, but that is probably going to be a couple short.

16:19
Cabrera Bello shares lead, huge break for Rory

Cabrera Bello -15 (16) McIlroy -15 (14)

Rafa Cabrera Bello has a pop at the 16th green and pulls his 3-wood into the sand, but his superb splash-out sets up a two-foot birdie putt that gets him into a tie at the top.

McIlroy, meanwhile, pushes another tee-shot right at the 15th and his ball heads for the water, but he gets so, so lucky and it pulls up a couple of feet short of the hazard.

Hidalgo joins McIlroy at the top

Hidalgo -15 (13), McIlroy -15 (14)

Angel Hidalgo has entertained us with his big swishes and amazing follow-throughs with the driver, and he's now in a tie for the lead after rolling in a 10-foot putt for birdie at the 13th.

Up at 14, McIlroy's putt is longer than I thought, close to 30 feet, and he coaxes it down the slope to a couple of feet to set up a stress-free par.

Rory McIlroy; outright leader!

McIlroy -15 (13)

What a putt from Rory McIlroy at the 13th. He's clipped a lovely approach to six feet, and his putt circles 360 degrees around the hole before his ball drops south!

That's an incredible way to hit the outright lead, and he's in good shape at 14 after a solid iron to around 20 feet.

Ayora just one behind, Saddier slides

Ayora -13 (16), Saddier -13 (12)

Could Angel Ayora be the man to surprise us all? The young Spaniard plays a delightful pitch at the long 16th to leave himself a tap-in for birdie that moves him one behind the leaders.

And there are now four tied at the top as Saddier slips up again, missing from four feet after finding the back bunker from the tee.

15:47
What a save from McIlroy!

McIlroy -14 (12)

A pumped-up Rory McIlroy takes dead aim at the pin on the short 12th, but he's hit the wrong club and his ball finds the back bunker. It's not a great splash out, pulling up eight feet short, but he nails the putt to stay tied at the top with just six holes remaining.

McIlroy and Lagergren miss great chances

McIlroy -14 (11), Lagergren -14 (12)

Two excellent chances to go clear of the pack go begging. Lagergren is just off target from 12 feet at the 12th, while McIlroy sets up a similar chance at the 11th.

But his confident putt stays on the high side, and it's as you were at the top.

Lowry finishes with a birdie

Lowry -7 (18)

It's not been the best of weeks for Shane Lowry, but he should post a top-20 finish after a birdie at the last caps a 71 and a score of 7-under.

15:24
McIlroy makes a mess of the 10th

McIlroy -14 (10)

The par-5 10th hole should have been a great birdie chance for Rory McIlroy with his length, but he carves his drive into the trees and can't find the green with his ambitious second.

His pitch from the lush rough digs in 20 feet short, and the putt for birdie never had the pace to get there. That's a disappointing par, but he's still tied at the top.

15:20
Ayora not out of it

Ayora -12 (14)

We haven't mentioned Angel Ayora today, but he's quietly crept into contention and is now only two off the lead after holing a big-breaking 20-foot putt for his fourth birdie of the day at the 14th.

Five players now share Irish Open lead

Hidalgo -14 (9)

Angel Hidalgo is animated and charismatic, certainly one of the more entertaining players on Tour, and the Spaniard gets a 10-footer to drop for birdie at the 9th and makes it a five-way tie at the top.

15:07
McIlroy tied for the lead!

McIlroy -14 (9)

Rory McIlroy gets a little luck at the 9th after blocking his drive way right. He's missed the trees and got a clear line to the green, hammers a gap wedge to 12 feet, and the birdie putt never looked like missing.

The cheers reverberate around The K Club as McIlroy moves into a share of the lead!

15:02
Saddier slips up

Saddier -14 (8), Cabrera Bello -14 (10), Lagergren -14 (9)

Adrien Saddier's run of pars comes to an abrupt end at the 8th, where he overshoots the green with his tee shot and, despite an excellent chip from the rough, his four-footer for par fails to drop.

Up at the 10th, Cabrera Bello is an inch from making another birdie, and he turns in 31 and in a share of the lead with Saddier and Lagergren, who just missed a great chance from five feet at the ninth.

Wayward irons hurting McIlroy

McIlroy (-13)

Rory's iron-play has not been good today, and he looks disgusted with his tee shot to the 8th as he carves it 30 feet right of the pin. But as bad as his irons have been, his putting has been solid and he comes within a whisker of holing another long effort for birdie.

The rock-solid par keeps him two behind Saddier, who cards his seventh consecutive par of the day at the 7th.

14:40
McIlroy misses, Lagergren hits

McIlroy (-13), Lagergren (-14)

The 7th has played the toughest hole of the tournament at The K Club, but McIlroy gives himself a good birdie chance from just outside 15 feet. But the putt lacks the required pace and he stays two back.

Up at the 8th, Joakim Lagergren knocks his tee shot to around 12 feet and nails the chance to move alongside RCB on 14-under.

Saddier scrambling hard

Saddier (-15), Hildago (-13)

The leader is starting to get a little ragged and misses another green at the 6th, but Saddier pulls off another excellent up-and-down to stay at 15-under. That's six pars in a row now for the Frenchman.

His playing-partner Hidalgo also gets himself out of trouble with a lovely flop shot from the greenside rough, and he stays two behind along with McIlroy and Lagergren.

14:25
Chance missed for McIlroy

McIlroy (-13)

It's been raining heavily, on and off, in the Dublin area today, but that hasn't stopped the Rory fans coming out in their thousands to cheer on their hero.

The views around the green at the 6th are incredible, with the galleries at least 10 deep in places, but there are groans instead of cheers as McIlroy's birdie putt from 15 feet shaves the right edge.

14:22
Class from Cabrera Bello

Cabrera Bello (-14), Saddier (-15)

What a move Rafa Cabrera Bello has made today. After his ace at the 3rd and birdie at the 4th, the former Ryder Cup star knocks a beaut of an iron to six feet at the short 8th.

Rafa raps in the birdie putt, and he's now just one behind Saddier, who has just made a great par save at the 5th to stay at -15.
