Rory McIlroy delighted his legion of fans at The K Club as he snatched the Amgen Irish Open title after a stunning finish to the final round, edging out Joakim Lagergren in a playoff.

The Masters champion looked an unlikely winner as he needed to eagle the final hole in regulation to force extra holes, with Lagergren in the clubhouse on 17-under after posting a bogey-free 66.

But McIlroy produced a blockbuster finish to send the crowd into hysterics, rattling in a 30-foot putt for only the second eagle of the day at the 18th as he also carded a 66.

The top two returned to the 18th tee for a sudden-death playoff, and they could not be separated for two holes as they traded birdies, but Lagergren made the pivotal mistake on the third extra hole.

Lagergren had the advantage of being in the fairway with McIlroy in trouble in the rough on the right, but the Swede tugged his second shot too far left and watched in angst as his ball dribbled off the edge of the green and into the water.

McIlroy gouged his second safely onto the green and safely two-putted for a cast-iron birdie, and he was crowned champion moments later after Lagergren's chip missed the target.

"This has exceeded all of my expectations," said an emotional McIlroy afterwards. "I thought it was going to be a nice homecoming, obviously coming home with a green jacket and all that, but this has been absolutely incredible. I'm just so, so happy I could play the way I did this week for all of them and get the win.

"This is absolutely incredible. I love coming home, and I love playing in this atmosphere. Moments like these are the things you're going to remember well after your career is over. This is a really special day."

McIlroy's eagle putt on the 72nd hole will be replayed countless times for years to come, and he added: "I wanted to just be aggressive with it. It was such a cool moment, such a cool feeling for that to go in. That gave me a chance in the playoff.

"The way the 18th was playing today, it just felt like it was a case of who was going to blink first. Joakim hit a poor second shot into the third playoff hole and that opened the door for me. I'm just so happy to win my second Irish Open."

McIlroy had earlier made a clumsy start in heavy rain, a poor chip at the first leading to an opening bogey before he hit back with two monster putts for birdies, holing from around 40 feet on both the 2nd and 5th greens.

Despite struggling for consistency with his irons, McIlroy stayed in the hunt and added another birdie at the 9th to move into a share of the lead, and he made another big gain at 13, where his ball circled the entire cup before dropping.

But Lagergren seized the initiative when he hit one of the shots of the week at the long 16th, knocking a superb second to six feet and converting for eagle as he leapfrogged the leaders.

The cool Swede closed with a birdie to move two clear of the chasing pack, only for McIlroy to produce another memorable moment in his stellar career, prompting cheers that echoed around the Dublin region.

Rafa Cabrera Bello enjoyed an early highlight when the former Ryder Cup star made a spectacular ace at the short 3rd, and he was one of five players who shared the lead on the back nine, but he faded down the stretch and settled for a 67 and a tie for third with fellow Spaniard Angel Hidalgo (71).

Another huge birdie for McIlroy

McIlroy (-13), Saddier (-15)

McIlroy holed a 40-footer for birdie at the 2nd, and he's just nailed another from similar distance at the 5th. Three birdies in five holes after his poor start, and the home favourite is now just two off the lead.

Back at the 4th, Saddier and Hidalgo can't take advantage of the par-5 and settle for a pair of pars.

14:07
Hatton in freefall

Hatton (-2)

Tyrrell Hatton started the day with high hopes of mounting a late charge for the title, but he's having a poor day in the rain. Four bogeys in an outward 38, and he's just found water with a woeful second to the 11th. That's a double-bogey, and he's back to 2-under-par.

McIlroy birdies the 4th

McIlroy (-12)

Excellent stuff from the Masters champion at the long 4th. McIlroy manages to find the green with his second shot from an iffy lie in the semi-rough. He lags well from 40 feet and pops it in for birdie to move within three of the leader.

13:54
Another error from Hidalgo

Hidalgo (-13), Saddier (-15), Lagergren (-13)

It's back-to-back bogeys for Hidalgo after he finds the greenside bunker with his tee shot at the 8th, from where he splashed out to just inside 20 feet and didn't get close with the par putt.

He slips back to -13 alongside RCB and Joakim Lagergren, who has birdied the 1st and 4th, while Saddier has started with three good pars and he's now two clear.

13:38
Big save from McIlroy

McIlroy (-11), Saddier (-15), Hildago (-14)

Rory pulls his tee shot to the short 3rd and he's very lucky to avoid the water, his ball embedding in the lush grass just a couple of yards from the hazard. He chips to six feet, and the putt finds the target to keep him at 11-under.

Back on the 2nd, a wayward tee shot from Hildago costs him a shot, and Saddier pars to find himself the outright leader once again.

Cabrera Bello on the charge

Cabrera Bello (-13)

After his fabulous ace at the 3rd, Rafa Cabrera Bello almost makes another eagle at the long 4th after a superb fairway-wood to 12 feet. The putt is just short, but that's a birdie for the Spaniard and he's only two back

Birdie for McIlroy

McIlroy (-11)

What a putt from McIlroy on the 2nd green. After that clumsy bogey at the 1st, he biffs a perfect drive down the 2nd fairway only to come up 40 feet short with his approach.

It's a slow, uphill putt on a wet green, but he judges the pace and line to perfection and the fans love to see that. Back to 11-under, and four shots off the lead.

Tied at the top

Hidalgo (-15), Saddier (-15)

Angel Hidalgo, who was on "59 watch" yesterday, almost holes his approach to the 1st and taps in to earn a share of the lead with Saddier, who makes a solid par.

13:18
Clumsy from McIlroy

McIlroy (-10)

Not the start McIlroy was hoping for. Despite a perfect tee shot, he pushed an 8-iron right of the green, and his chip came hot off the face and wandered around 8 feet past the hole.

His par putt shaved the left edge, and that's a bogey for the fan favourite.

Playing-partner Garcia-Heredia also drops a shot after three-putting from distance, and he slips to -11.

13:14
HOLE-IN-ONE for Cabrera Bello

Cabrera Bello (-12)

Huge moment at the 184-yard 3rd hole, where Rafa Cabrera Bello has made a stunning ace to move within three shots off the lead.

The Spaniard's perfectly-struck mid-iron pitched a few inches short of the hole and hopped straight in. Wow!

Lowry up, Hatton down

Lowry -6 (7), Hatton -6 (5)

Shane Lowry moves to 7-under as he converts his excellent tee shot at the short 8th, but Hatton is heading in the opposite direction. Back-to-back bogeys for the Englishman, and he slips to -5

12:59
McIlroy off and running

McIlroy -11

Huge reception on the 1st tee for the Masters champion. The weather may be cool and wet, but there's nothing but warmth from the big galleries following the headline act today.

McIlroy begins at -11, just four shots off the lead, and it's a confident start as he finds the centre of the fairway with a smooth 3-wood.

12:52
Quiet starts for Ryder Cup duo

Lowry and Hatton (-6)

It's not been the best of starts for Ryder Cup stars Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton. Lowry is level for the day after 7 holes, although he's just knocked his tee shot to 4 feet at the 8th.

Hatton, a couple of holes behind, has just bogeyed the 5th and is +1 today, 6-under for the tournament.
