Jon Rahm hopeful both he and Sergio Garcia will make Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup team

Jon Rahm believes it would be "pretty unique" if both he and his LIV Golf peer Sergio Garcia made Luke Donald's 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

Jon Rahm is hopeful he's done enough to earn a place in Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup team this September, and he'd also quite like it if his compatriot and LIV Golf peer Sergio Garcia was to join him in New York.

Rahm made his feelings about the Ryder Cup be known to reporters after finishing T34 alongside Garcia at The Open at Royal Portrush

Both Rahm and Garcia are unlikely going to play their way into Donald's team automatically ahead of deadline day at the end of the Betfred British Masters in August.

But with six captain's picks available for Donald after the final counting DP World Tour event at The Belfry next month, Rahm is hopeful he has already shown enough in the majors this season and on LIV Golf to warrant a pick.

Many would consider Rahm is a lock for a pick given he has excelled in three previous Ryder Cup matches, is a two-time major champion and former World No.1.

Not to mention he has a close relationship with fellow Legion XIII member Tyrrell Hatton, who is currently fourth and inside the automatic positions for a place on Donald's team.

Rahm's other strong relationship in the European team would be alongside his childhood hero Garcia, 15 years his elder.

Although Rahm is solely focused on his own chances of making the team, he would be very pleased to see Garcia also punch his ticket to New York.

Should Garcia make Donald's team, the Spaniard would join Sir Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood for most European Ryder Cup appearances with 11.

"It would be very special," Rahm said of the possibility both he and Garcia will represent Spain at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

"I'd like to be on the team first myself and then think about somebody else.

"Yeah, it would be quite unique.

"He [Garcia] would be a fantastic guy obviously with his Ryder Cup experience, how he played in the Northeast and actually having played at Bethpage, having played well at Bethpage in the past, so somebody that's familiar with the golf course. He's definitely somebody that should be in Luke's radar.

"Sergio played fantastic earlier in the year too. He was playing some extremely high quality golf. Maybe not so much the last six weeks or so. I played with him last week in Valderrama, and he was still striking it beautifully, which is what you need in many aspects of golf in the Ryder Cup. Especially a golf course that difficult, somebody who's hitting it well.

"Again, I like to think about myself first in that case. If I get the call that I'm in, then I worry about somebody like Sergio."

Garcia also spoke about his own Ryder Cup chances after closing with a 68 to finish just outside the top 30 at The Open in Northern Ireland.

The 2017 Masters champion snapped his driver on the 2nd tee box on Sunday, just to make his final round look even more impressive.

Although Garcia has not performed at his best in three major starts this season, he did register a second LIV Golf win earlier in the season in Hong Kong.

Garcia, who has a good past record at Bethpage, also thinks there's a bit more time to show Donald his game is in good working order.

Both Rahm and Garcia will be looking to enhance their chances of making Donald's team with strong performances at this week's LIV Golf UK at JCB in England.

Donald has made it clear he is watching LIV Golf League events intently this season to chart the progress of a number of European players, none more so than Rahm, Hatton and Garcia.
