Day one of the 2026 PGA Championship is in the books.

After 18 holes, there is a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard.

World number one Scottie Scheffler was in the afternoon wave on Thursday in the 156-man field and went round Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania in three-under 67.

Scheffler, looking to defend the Wanamaker Trophy, is tied for the lead with seven other players.

That group included former PGA Championship winner and LIV Golf recruit Martin Kaymer.

Kaymer, 41, was among the first wave of players to be recruited by the breakaway in 2022.

Since the move, the German has been plagued by injuries but rolled back the years with his performance in the opening round.

Kaymer - best known for his two major titles, an eight-week spell as the top-ranked player and holing the winning putt for Europe at the 2012 Ryder Cup - suggested after his round that his fast start may have been sparked by a question at Tuesday's Champions Dinner.

A PGA of America member asked if he was still playing professionally.

"I got asked by a guy if I'm playing this week or if I'm done with golf," Kaymer said, adding that he wasn't going to just fly half way around the world for a juicy steak.

Kaymer is one of 11 LIV Golf players in the field this week.

After 18 holes, only five LIV players managed to shoot under par.

Cameron Smith, who has missed the cut in his last six major appearances, carded a 69. As did Chile's Joaquin Niemann and former Masters champion Jon Rahm.

David Puig, Thomas Detry, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Elvis Smyle, Tom McKibbin all face a battle to make the cut.

Most surprisingly, though, was the performance of Bryson DeChambeau.

DeChambeau came into the second men's major of the year expected to make a strong challenge for the Wanamaker Trophy.

But the American could only manage a six-over 76 and will need something very special if he is to stick around for the weekend.

DeChambeau also missed the cut at the 2026 Masters.
