Major champ criticises LIV Golf over lack of answers: "It's hard to make a decision"

Cameron Smith says he "needs more answers" before he decides to commit his future to LIV Golf. 

LIV filed for bankruptcy in September after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its financial backing, bringing existing player contracts to an end.

The league is nevertheless hoping to continue in 2027 under a proposed player-owned structure dubbed 'LIV 2.0'. 

Its plans are understood to depend on retaining several of its leading names, including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Smith.

Rahm and DeChambeau have options to return to the PGA Tour following their recent major championship victories, while Smith’s future playing schedule could increasingly centre on the DP World Tour.

The Australian, 33, is competing at this week's Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews, where he won the Open Championship in 2022.

Smith told the Sydney Morning Herald contributor Evin Priest that his position with LIV is in "a bit of limbo". 

"We don't know, really," he said. 

"It's hard to make a decision when you don't have at least some of the answers to make the right decision, or [any] decision. 

"We need a few more answers."

His decision to commit to several DP World Tour events has added to speculation over his future beyond LIV. 

Smith also competed in last week's FedEx Open de France, although he missed the cut.

There are wider implications for Smith, particularly when it comes to the majors.

His exemptions from winning the 2022 Open Championship will eventually expire at the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open. 

His five-year exemption at those three events runs until the end of 2027, meaning he may need to improve his world ranking or qualify through other routes to maintain regular access.

Smith has struggled for results in recent seasons. 

He has missed the cut in eight of his last nine major appearances and is currently ranked 145th in the world.

The Ripper GC captain has also gone more than three years without a LIV individual title, while his most recent victory outside the circuit came at the Australian PGA Championship in December 2022.

Smith acknowledged his recent struggles after missing the cut in France.

"Every sportsperson in history has been criticised for something," he said. 

"I know I haven't played my best golf the last couple of years. 

"It eats at you a little bit, and you try to get out of the slump."
