Kai Trump’s latest college golf tournament produces mixed results

The Miami freshman finished her second college tournament in Indiana after a difficult opening 36 holes and a much-improved final round.

Kai Trump finished 13th of 14 players at her second college golf tournament, although the Miami freshman ended the week with her best round in Indiana.

Trump carded a 5-over 77 in Tuesday's final round of the Golfweek Put Me In Coach Invitational at Delaware Country Club, finishing the 54-hole event at 27-over par.

The 19-year-old's final position of 13th out of 14 players underlined the challenge she is facing as she adjusts to college golf, but there were at least signs of improvement throughout the tournament.

Trump opened with an 86 on Monday before following it with an 80.

She then saved her best for the final round, making three birdies on her way to a 77.

Her Miami teammate Rebekah Gardner won the tournament by six shots on 3-under par.

For Trump, the latest tournament was another opportunity to gain experience after a difficult first college appearance.

She finished tied for 102nd in a 120-player field at last month's Golfweek Fall Classic.

Her latest result means Trump has now faced two testing tournaments at college level, although her ability to improve her score in each round in Indiana will give her something to build on.

Trump's game has been built around her length off the tee, athletic swing and ball striking. She has also acknowledged that her short game remains an area where she needs to improve as she continues to develop.

Wrist issue adds to challenge

Trump's transition to college golf has also been complicated by a wrist injury, something Patrick Reed has also experienced recently on the DP World Tour.

She underwent left wrist surgery earlier this year to address damage involving the stabilising tissues around her ECU tendon and fibrocartilage complex.

During her first college tournament, Trump revealed that she had aggravated the wrist after a shot near a cart path struck unexpectedly hard ground.

Further testing showed the damage was not as serious as initially feared, allowing her to return to competition this week.

Trump has also experienced the jump to a professional-level field, making her LPGA debut at The ANNIKA after receiving a sponsor exemption.

She shot 83 and 75 to finish 18-over par and miss the cut.

For now, the focus is on development rather than competing with the world's best.

Trump's 13th-place finish in Indiana was not the result she would have wanted, but the 77 provided a positive finish to her second college tournament.

Her next appearance for Miami has yet to be confirmed.

Away from the course, Trump is the daughter of former model and entrepreneur Vanessa Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

Vanessa is the girlfriend of Tiger Woods.
