Rory McIlroy's former manager believes Donald Trump will get The Open at Turnberry

Rory McIlroy's former manager Chubby Chandler believes the UK government needs to keep US President Donald Trump onside, and therefore let him host The Open at Turnberry.

Rory McIlroy's former manager Chubby Chandler is confident United States President Donald Trump will finally get to see his Trump Turnberry host The Open Championship.

The R&A recently admitted "big logistical issues" around local infrastracture is the biggest issue standing in the way of Turnberry hosting The Open once again in the future.

The Open has been hosted at Turnberry four times down the years with its first 1977 and last in 2009.

During the 2009 Open where Stewart Cink denied golf legend Tom Watson in a playoff, a total of 120,000 people attended Turnberry.

Fast forward to the 2025 Open at Royal Portrush earlier this month, and 280,000 people walked through the gates to see Scottie Scheffler win his fourth career major title and move one leg away from completing the career grand slam.

The Ailsa Course at Trump Turnberry is widely considered one of the best golf courses in the world.

Here at GolfMagic we certainly consider it to be one the best Open Championship courses.

The Trump Organization acquired Turnberry in 2014.

Despite a recent petition of more than 50,000 people urging against Turnberry hosting an Open again, there are plenty of analysts who consider the R&A needs to find a way to get Trump's venue back on the roster.

One of them is McIlroy's former manager Chubby Chandler, who parted ways with the now five-time major champion in 2011.

"Trump can do what he wants," Chandler told Action Network

"You know what he's after, don't you? It’s the Nobel Peace Prize. That's the whole game here. He’s after the Nobel Peace Prize. That's unbelievable. I haven't spoken to him since he's been president. He's offline.

"He owns 16 golf courses or something. Don't think owning the PGA Tour or something interests him. He's better off on the edge, just sticking his oar in now and again

"He'll get The Open at Turnberry for sure. Our government will make him get it. Our government needs to keep him on side.

"Well, because when you think about it, he's now the most important and most famous man in the world, so why would you stop him handling The Open?

"The course is better than even Birkdale. It’s just fantastic. The security will be his problem, not our problem. When he comes over, there's 50 4x4s. It's not that big a deal but our government will definitely want to make him feel good, look good, whatever.

"If you don't have Trump onside these days, you're not anything. So you're talking about a golf tournament that should be there, that they're being pedantic about, they'll just toss it out. They must do."

Earlier this week Trump cut the ribbon for the opening of The New Course in Menie at his Trump International Scotland.

Whether Trump gets to cut the ribbon on the hosting of his first Open remains to be seen.

Will Turnberry get to host The Open again?
