England's Jordan Smith will take a one-shot lead into the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The 33-year-old PGA Tour rookie, who earned his playing rights in the United States via the DP World Tour's 10 cards initiative, fired a five-under 65 on day two at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Smith's round included one eagle, four birdies and one dropped shot.

He finds himself on 10-under par overall, one clear of a group of four players that includes former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and former Open winner Brian Harman.

American duo Michael Thorbjornsen and Ryan Gerard are also on nine-under.

Matsuyama came under fire from Sky Sports commentator Rob Lee during the second round broadcast

Reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun, Akshay Bhatia and 54-hole PGA Championship leader Alex Smalley are also inside the top 10.

Tony Finau, who is still chasing a spot in the 2026 U.S. Open field, and Rickie Fowler were among the notables to miss the 36-hole cut.

"I'm obviously very, very happy," Smith told reporters.

"[I am] going into the weekend in a good position. The putter's been hot the last two days, which is nice to see.

"Swing still hasn't felt a hundred percent, but we've been hitting a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, which is key out here.

"[I am] just going to take the chances when we get them."

Smith began his round with an eagle at the first and he immediately followed it with a birdie.

"It's always nice to get off to a start like that," said Smith.

"Hit a driver straight down the middle of the fairway.

"Hit a 5-wood [into the green] which I thought was going to come up short in the bunker, but just covered it, got a nice bounce it went down to about six foot, which always helps, need those lucky breaks, so, yeah, a nice way to start the day."

Smith's only dropped shot came on the 14th when he missed the green right with his approach.

He said that he had a bit of mud on his golf ball and didn't realise it would dive straight right.

Smith added that he is excited for the weekend as it's a new experience leading a PGA Tour event.

"[I am] not going to force anything, not going to rush anything, just going to see what happens and enjoy it."

He added: "Obviously [this is] my first year out here and we've played a lot, we had to play a lot.

"Just keeping our card this year was our goal. We've got off to a really good start, which is really nice to see.

"So, yeah, just going to try and push on from that and try and get on to some of the playoff events and see what happens."
